Bottle calves are fun to have around the yard in the summer for the kids/grandkids to play with. With the cost to purchase one and the cost of milk replacer you want to do everything you can to keep that calf healthy and growing. Reading up on information on how to care for a calf properly and how to protect them with the correct vaccines is crucial in your calves health.
Click on the link to read up on calf care before bringing home a new calf or two to take care of.
Call the clinic for any questions on vaccines that can be administered to your calves.

Calving and calf management practices may vary across operations and can play a role in reducing death loss in beef calves.

In a few weeks cow calf pairs will be heading out to pasture for the summer. Some pairs travel long distances to their summer time grazing spots. It's a good idea to review the transport rules and regulations for hauling livestock before loading time comes.
If you bought a new bull from another province (or state) check and see what is required for rest stops and off loading times so you can plan accordingly on getting him home in the best condition as possible.

Four things you need to know about the new cattle transport regulations that are now in effect.

Please click on the Alberta government link to read about Equine Herpes Virus. If you are wanting to vaccinate your horses allow adequate time for the vaccination to take effect before travelling to events. Don't travel if your horse is showing any symptoms. Don't share tack, water pails or feed buckets.

Please call ahead if you would like to order vaccines to make sure we have them in stock as we are sending lots out this last couple of weeks.

Spring like weather might be here (for now anyways) which is good news considering the deep freeze we just came out of. However the up and down temperatures, along with the wet ground is tough on calves.

First Defence has been going out the door steadily this calving season. Protection against bacterial scours (E-Coli) and Viral scours (Coronavirus) helps to keep your calves healthy. Giving your calves plenty of room, lots of bedding and calving in an area different than where the cows are fed all winter also helps to control the spread of scours. Call the clinic if you would like to put an order in for First Defence.

Today is a day to recognize the Agricultural Industry. An industry we are very thankful to be a part of and an industry that allows the generations of our farming or ranching youth to continue for years to come. It may not be for everyone, but it's an industry everyone is thankful for.
Thank you to all our hardworking producers and agricultural enthusiasts for all your hard work and dedication. We are grateful for your family's contributions.

Tiffany Hawkins
I joined the Stockyards team in September 2021 where I started working part time at the Tofield location. I loved working there as it was close enough to ride my horse to work. Shortly after joining Stockyards I decided to enroll myself in a Veterinary Health Care Assistant program and earned my diploma in December of 2022. In January of 2022 I started working at the Edmonton location full time.
My husband and I breed, raise and train Quarter horses. We enjoy going on mountain trips, roping and barrel racing, taking clinics and lessons. I also love sharing my passion for horses with the students I teach riding lessons to. I hope to spend many more years working with the Stockyards team

A good reminder when applying chains. The best way to limit pinching and apply even pressure on the calf's leg when pulling. The same rule applies if pulling by hand, puller or pulling a backwards calf.
