Hope everyone got a decent amount of rain the last couple nights!
Here is some good information for those that put creep feeders out for calves, or those that are considering it but don't know where to start.
Creep feed has many benefits to not only your calves, but the cows and pasture as well.

Considerations for Feeding Young Beef Calves (250–275 lbs)

Feeding young beef calves in the 250–275 lb range requires a carefully balanced ration to support healthy growth, early rumen development, and immune function. At this stage, it’s essential to provide a high-energy diet (70–75% TDN) with adequate protein levels (14–16% CP) to drive weight gain and muscle growth. A moderate amount of quality fiber helps stimulate rumen activity without diluting energy density. Essential vitamins (A, D, E) and a complete mineral package—including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and key trace minerals like zinc, copper, and selenium—are critical to support bone development, health, and performance. Clean, fresh water and highly palatable feed are also key to ensuring consistent intake and minimizing stress during this transition period.

1. High-Energy Ration (70–75% TDN)
Feature: Grain-based diets using corn, barley, or oats to deliver digestible energy
Benefit: Promotes rapid weight gain, supports immune response, and improves feed efficiency during early growth phases.
________________________________________
2. Elevated Protein Levels (14–16% CP)
Feature: Balanced protein from soybean meal, canola meal, or distillers grains
Benefit: Supports muscle development, immune function, and frame growth in young calves.
________________________________________
3. Controlled Fiber for Rumen Health
Feature: Moderated inclusion of quality grass hay or fiber sources
Benefit: Maintains proper rumen function without compromising energy intake or performance.
________________________________________
4. Full Vitamin Fortification
Feature: Supplemental Vitamins A, D, and E in premixes
Benefit: Enhances immunity, bone growth, and reproductive development; supports resilience during stress.
________________________________________
5. Balanced Mineral Program
Feature: Proper Calcium:Phosphorus ratios plus key trace minerals (Zn, Cu, Se, Mn)
Benefit: Builds strong bones, improves disease resistance, and ensures long-term herd productivity.
________________________________________
6. Consistent Water Access
Feature: Clean, fresh water available at all times
Benefit: Supports digestion, nutrient transport, and heat regulation—especially critical in warmer months.
________________________________________
7. Palatable, Safe Transition Feeds
Feature: Highly digestible starter rations with optional flavor enhancers
Benefit: Increases intake during the transition off milk, reduces stress, and minimizes risk of digestive upset.
________________________________________
8. On-Farm Support and Customization
Feature: Rations tailored by weight, target gain, and available forages
Benefit: Ensures optimal performance under your conditions—not just a one-size-fits-all approach.
