So - My Princess River was holter monitored (24 heart monitor) a month ago and was found to have GSDIVA. This is a condition which is hereditary and apparent in the German Shepherd / Shiloh Shepherd breed, and is the same disease my boy Kaiden had. We took River to the cardiologist and had an echo-cardiogram done, and her heart is structurally OK. Unlike Kaiden who also had mild SAS and a slightly enlarged ventricle - which likely ultimately killed him at age 4. River has a good prognosis - but she has the risk for sudden death. No drugs were prescribed to her. The biggest thing is we were aiming to breed her - and she was not spayed yet. Had we got her spayed - there would have been a terrible risk that she would not do well under anesthesia. As it is now - we would need to bring her to the vet college to have her spayed (and the gastropexy). At a very high cost!
The message here is that all puppies should be holtered. This prognisis on River was very unexpected as there has not been any sudden death seen in this line. Spaying River may have ended in her death.
My hopes are that in future - ALL Shilohs will be holtered as part of the breeding program. It may not stop this terrible disease - but it may supply some answers.
There is now a holter available in Ontario thanks in part to the kind donations that Kaiden's Go Fund Me page brought in. Please book it and have your puppies monitored. This may save their lives and will pave the way to finding some answers to the disease and the hereditary risks.
