HERO DOG, FLO
BCK9 would like to salute its’ first Canadian Hero Dog, Flo. She is a 4 year old Yukon Special from Whitehorse, currently living in Vancouver BC., with her parents Samantha and Scott and her little “sister” Sophie.
On February 18, 2025, while her human family visited with relatives, Flo spent time with her pet sitter and friend, Chris.
Her story unfolds in Chris’ own words: “Umm- Flo saved a dogs’ life yesterday!!
We went for a long play at the Trout Lake off leash area (she was amazing). Around mid-point an elderly woman came with an energetic black labradoodle I later learned she was babysitting for her son. I was playing with Flo and lost track of them when I heard her calling for him repeatedly, so I began looking as well. I don’t know if Flo could sense what we were doing, but she started to appear agitated.
After a minute of looking, Flo made a beeline for the small dock, which was really unlike her. Like she shot out of a cannon. She stopped right at the corner of it where the dock meets a large rock and stood stock still. I called for her but she didn’t move. She just kept looking at the corner of the dock at the water and back at me. When I didn’t come, she sprinted a quarter of the way to me, yelped, then sprinted back and stood still in the same place again, looking at something. I thought “Could she be calling ME!?” and started walking over.
When I got close enough, I saw what she was pointing at. The poor black labradoodle was fully submerged in a water patch that had no ice in it, holding on to the corner of the dock, trapped there by the ice around him, the high rock on the shore side, and unable to get a foothold up the dock. Because he was jet black, I could barely see him. He was panicking but completely silent.
I ran the rest of the way, tossed the leash, sprawled out on the dock and lifted him out of the water and onto me. He was terrified. Flo went up to him and I swear was checking to see if he was ok. After he caught his breath they ran off and played chase for a while (which was great to warm up the poor doodle). He was ok!
The older woman and everyone around her helping to look for the dog all saw this happen. She thanked me profusely, but it genuinely was NOT me that saved the dog. If Flo didn’t find him, no one would have. He was almost completely obscured and impossible to see, not making a sound. He very well may have drowned in the freezing water.
I have genuinely never seen anything more remarkable from any dog. I keep running it over in my mind to process it. I’m just gobsmacked!”
Well folks, we too are “gobsmacked” at how dogs can do what they do.
BCK9 gives Flo 2 PAWS up and says “Keep up the good work Flo, you’ve officially earned your BLUE COLLAR!
