Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is a hardy, long-blooming perennial native to North America, known for its vibrant pink-purple petals and prominent cone-shaped center. It thrives in full sun, attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, and is highly valued in naturalized gardens, prairie plantings, and pollinator habitats. Purple coneflower is drought-tolerant once established and adapts well to a wide range of soils, making it easy to grow in many climates. In addition to its ornamental appeal, it has a long history of traditional medicinal use, especially for supporting immune health.

Seeds are available for $5 a package.

🌿 Welcome to Hand Harvested! 🌿
Northern Ontario’s small-batch native plant and seed nursery.

Hi everyone! I’m excited to share my growing journey as I build a greenhouse and online nursery dedicated to locally sourced, hand-collected seeds and cuttings. From purple willow and ninebark to wild clematis, limber honeysuckle, pearly everlasting, and more — my focus is on hardy, zone-3 native species that thrive in our northern climate. I will also be doing veggie starts to help you get those gardens going in spring!

Everything is grown in small batches with care, from seed stratification to potting and greenhouse propagation. I’ll be posting updates on new plants, seed availability, behind-the-scenes work, and tips for growing native species at home.

Whether you’re a gardener, landscaper, or just love supporting local growers — thanks for being here and follow along!

Wild Purple Clematis (Clematis occidentalis – Northern Ontario Native)
A hardy, vining wildflower native to the forests and rocky slopes of Northern Ontario. This clematis produces elegant nodding, bell-shaped purple flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by feathery silver seed heads. Thrives in part shade to full sun with cool, moist roots and well-drained soil. Ideal for naturalized gardens, trellises, and woodland edges. Low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly, and perfectly adapted to our northern climate.
