If your barrel horse had 2–4 months off over the winter, it’s totally normal, but they won’t be competition-ready overnight.
In general:
• 4–6 weeks to rebuild basic fitness (walking, trotting, slow loping)
• 6–10 weeks to regain muscle, wind, and strength
• 8–12+ weeks before they’re truly back in barrel racing shape, depending on age, condition, and how hard they were run before the break
Time off means they lose:
• Cardiovascular fitness
• Muscle tone and topline
• Tendon/ligament strength
• Mental sharpness for pattern work
Rushing it can lead to soreness, injuries, or a horse that feels flat and frustrated. Taking your time now means a sounder, stronger horse all season long.
Slow miles, correct work, and patience pay off. Spring wins are nice—but a healthy horse in July and August is even better 💙🐴
That’s why we love our Aquatread! Stronger, faster, fitter horse without the wear and tear on soft tissues and joints! 💪🏻
