If your barrel horse had 2–4 months off over the winter, it’s totally normal, but they won’t be competition-ready overnight.

In general:
• 4–6 weeks to rebuild basic fitness (walking, trotting, slow loping)
• 6–10 weeks to regain muscle, wind, and strength
• 8–12+ weeks before they’re truly back in barrel racing shape, depending on age, condition, and how hard they were run before the break

Time off means they lose:
• Cardiovascular fitness
• Muscle tone and topline
• Tendon/ligament strength
• Mental sharpness for pattern work

Rushing it can lead to soreness, injuries, or a horse that feels flat and frustrated. Taking your time now means a sounder, stronger horse all season long.

Slow miles, correct work, and patience pay off. Spring wins are nice—but a healthy horse in July and August is even better 💙🐴

That’s why we love our Aquatread! Stronger, faster, fitter horse without the wear and tear on soft tissues and joints! 💪🏻

A dressage trainer once told me:
“If you allow your horse to be a tourist, it will be a tourist.” —that really stuck with me

If you let them look everywhere, take in everything, and focus on anything other than you don’t be surprised when that shows up in your rides.

I don’t think a lot of people realize that most bad habits don’t start big.
They start as small things we allow:
• drifting through the shoulder
• looking out of the arena
• ignoring light cues
• tuning you out for a few seconds at a time

Over time, those little moments add up.

Before long, it’s not just “looking around.”
It’s a horse that’s bracey, distracted, late to respond, or hard to keep between the reins and legs.

99% of the issues I see didn’t come from a bad horse they came from inconsistency and missed moments.

The good news?
The fix usually starts just as small.

Attention.
Straightness.
Responsiveness.

What you allow today is what you’ll be training tomorrow.

Professional Horse Purchasing Assistance

As horse-buying season approaches, many buyers begin their search—but not everyone knows what to look for. If you want experienced guidance and peace of mind, I offer professional horse purchasing assistance.

I will attend viewings with you to thoroughly inspect and assess the horse, including riding and testing the horse myself before you get on. With extensive experience in purchasing horses, I know how to identify red flags and evaluate overall suitability.

My assessment includes:
• Teeth and hoof evaluation
• Tacking-up behavior and handling
• Basic muscle and soundness checks (not vet certified just basic checks, without vet PPE can’t guarantee soundness)
• General temperament and rideability assessment

My goal is to help you avoid costly mistakes and ensure the horse is the right fit for you.

📍 Travel available up to 3.5 hours
💬 Rates available upon request

Save yourself the stress and uncertainty of buying the wrong horse—bring a professional with you and buy with confidence.

If you don’t ride your horse, don’t run it.
If you don’t feed and supplement your horse properly, don’t run it.
If your first instinct is to blame your horse instead of your riding, go take a lesson.
Buying kids expensive horses without requiring lessons doesn’t create champions—it creates entitlement.
Buying horse after horse instead of teaching horsemanship makes you the problem.
And the bullying, gate-side trash talk, and tearing others down?
That’s exactly why barrel racers get labeled the way they do.
Can we go back to when this was fun?
When it wasn’t all about money or who has what?
I’ve heard “I bought this horse for X amount of dollars” more times than I can count—but can you ride it?
Truly, I don’t care what you paid.
Winning on a $5,000 horse that you trained yourself? That’s impressive.
Don’t lose faith because you think you need a $50,000–$100,000 horse.
You don’t.
