Yorkshire Terriers in 18 century
Early carte de visite copy of an 1850s Daguerreotype or Ambrotype (the top of its original gilded brass case can be seen in the copy). They were printed directly onto a surface such as metal or glass, and each was one of a kind. Cartes were made using negatives, from which it was possible to print multiple positive images. They were printed on sensitized paper that was then glued to a card. Because these cards were usually imprinted with the name and address of the photographer, it is possible to approximately date cartes de visite and to know where they were taken.
