Were you aware that we are an authorized retailer of CCIA tags ? 🐮

CCIA tags are to be placed on cattle before they leave the farm or the premises it is currently on. These tags associate reportable events and data to each unique CCIA number that has been applied to an animal. This number must be maintained until export or carcass inspection.
Reportable events and data include: Birth date, Move in and out dates, Imported, Exported, Retired animal events and more

Traceability is extremely important to keep our farms safe and healthy. CCIA tags allow us to track and contain serious health and food safety concerns from spreading to other farms, keeping our animals safe and the cattle industry strong.

Let's talk Copper in Sheep & Goats 🐑

Copper is an essential heavy metal for livestock. Dietary copper supports bone formation, healthy nerve function, red blood cell formation, aids in immune response, and more!

Now, although sheep and goats SEEM similar, there are actually many differences between these two ruminants.

Sheep cannot have the same copper amounts that goats can have. Sheep absorb copper in both their small and large intestines, while goats only absorb copper in their small intestine. This means that sheep absorb more copper as it passes through their bodies than goats do. Excess copper that the body doesn’t use gets stored in the liver. Excessive copper in the diet can cause the liver to become overloaded, and it will begin to release copper into the bloodstream, leading to copper toxicity.

What is copper toxicity? Too much copper in the bloodstream causes hemolytic anemia. Hemolytic anemia occurs when red blood cells are destroyed at a faster rate than the body can regenerate them. Copper toxicity can cause an increased respiratory rate, neurological issues, lethargy, inability to stand, and death.

This is why sheep and goats cannot be fed the same feeds, as the copper levels, along with other nutrients, are balanced specifically for each species. Watching what mineral supplements that you provide your sheep flock is also crucial to prevent copper toxicity.

We are in the depth of fly season right now 🪰

Did you know that garlic in cattle feed can act as a natural insect repellent ? 🧄

How does it work ? Garlic releases a sulfurous compound when it is consumed. One of these compounds, called allicin, creates an unpleasant odor that is released through the cattle's skin and breath. This odor creates a natural barrier that deters flies from the cattle.
Alot easier than trying to use fly spray on a herd of cattle, that's forsure !!

Why is fly control SO important ?
Fly Control is extremely important with livestock. Biting flies create discomfort among your herd, which can lead to decreased production rates throughout the summer months. Biting flies cause cattle to move around more often, as well as expend a large amount of energy stomping and swishing their tails to provide some relief from these swarms of flies. Energy is essential for livestock production. Expending this energy causes weight gain to become much slower, or come to a complete halt, as well as causes dairy production to go down.

Altosid is NOT designed to get rid of pre-existing flies, only to prevent more from emerging. Due to this, it is best to start providing this supplement early on in the spring, before the horn flies have a chance to start laying and hatching in your pastures.
