Back-to-School Safety Tips ... for Your Dog!!
The back-to-school season brings excitement, new schedules, and lots of changes around the household. While we’re focused on fresh school supplies, carpools, and homework routines, it’s easy to overlook how these changes affect our four-legged family members. Dogs thrive on consistency, and sudden shifts can leave them anxious, over-stimulated, or even at risk for accidents.
Here are some important dog safety reminders as your family transitions into the school year:
1. Extra Traffic = Extra Caution
School zones are busier than ever in the mornings and afternoons. Children, buses, bikes, and cars all add up to distractions for drivers and potential danger for pets. Keep your dog on a secure leash when walking near bus stops or crosswalks and never allow them to run free near school traffic.
2. Lunchboxes and Backpacks Can Hide Hazards
Dropped lunch kits and backpacks are irresistible to curious noses. Unfortunately, they may contain foods that are toxic to dogs—such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, or gum (xylitol/birch sugar).
~Teach kids to store their bags out of reach.
~Check your yard, mudroom, or entryway for “stray snacks” after school.
~Have a quick conversation with children about safe vs. unsafe foods for pets.
3. Separation Anxiety and Routine Changes
When the house suddenly goes quiet during the day, some dogs struggle with loneliness. Signs of stress may include chewing, barking, pacing, or even accidents.
~Provide comfort items like a favorite blanket or shirt with your scent.
~Use puzzle feeders or interactive toys to keep them engaged.
~Try gradual alone-time training in the time leading up to school, if possible.
4. After-School Greetings
The moment kids burst through the door after school is exciting for both children and dogs—but it can also be overwhelming.
~ Encourage calm greetings by having children put down backpacks before saying hello.
~ Teach your dog a simple “sit” or “wait” so the reunion is safe and controlled.
5. Carpool Safety
If your dog comes along for school runs, keep them safe on the ride.
~ Use an Optimus harness and seatbelt clip, or secured crate.
~ Never allow dogs to ride loose in the car or stick their heads out the window—both can lead to serious injuries.
~Remember: hot cars are still dangerous in the early fall. Don’t leave your dog behind while you run inside.
