Wow it has been a busy spring!

Our weekly availability for NON-URGENT **large animal** appointments (think preventative wellness like vaccines, dentals, coggins, or old lameness) is rapidly booking up. We are booked for the month of April and have limited availability in May.

Please reach out if you would like us to add your horse to our schedule!

If you have a concern, please reach out earlier rather than later as it may require proactive work with our schedule to get you a same-week appointment slot.

Emergencies or same-day appointment needs may fall into an after-hours appointment slot and have associated fees.

Sometimes things happen that feel too good to be true.

A week of sunshine in Terrace during the spring or fall. A nail in a horse’s hoof that misses all the critical structures. A veterinary clinic giving another veterinary clinic a work truck.

But this one is true.

Horizon Equine Veterinary Clinic in Abbotsford has gifted us their retired work truck.

Horizon Equine, a clinic 1300 km away, that could have sold this truck locally, emailed Dr. Seaton, offered it to Mount Remo Vet, and prepared it for its trip North.

Why? Because they want to support equine medicine. Simple as that. They know that being an equine veterinarian is hard. The equipment is expensive. The hours are long. And horses are complicated. But, rolling up in a fully set-up vehicle makes it much better.

We are blown away by this generosity and are SO excited to use this truck to better the lives of horses in the Northwest.

Thank you, Dr. Steve, for believing in us. Thank you, Tracy, for facilitating an incredibly smooth transition for Big Red.

When you see this truck, remember that the world is a better place when we work together. And, if you are looking for good people, go to Horizon Equine Veterinary Clinic.

Last year around this time we started offering one-time-service appointments for pet parents who do not have a regular veterinarian. It went well for members of the community and our office.

Again, we have short-term availability for this appointment type.

Please call the office if you have a CURRENT need for veterinary care!

We have a tech in training!

On January 1st, Hannah started her Veterinary Technologist Open Learning Program through Thompson Rivers University. Over the next 3 years, she will complete rigorous online schooling in combination with hands on training and work experience with Mount Remo Vet. We are super excited to partner with her as she pursues her passion for animals through veterinary medicine.

As a part of this program, she will be required to demonstrate clinical skills with real-world scenarios - patients who need these procedures or treatments as part of their veterinary management. Some of these skills need to be video taped.

If the care of your pet requires a clinical skill that aligns with Hannah's schooling, we may request permission for her to demonstrate her training during your appointment (+/- video). Please consider signing the consent form and contributing to the further education of our local community!

If you see her around the office - give her a pat on the back, congratulations, or a gift card for caffeinated beverages. This program is tough without working at the same time!

Congrats Hannah! We are excited to grow with you!

Did you know that cats are highly susceptible to Avian Influenza and there has been a recall issued for an American raw food diet?

Recently, multiple cases of rapid decline and death in our feline companions have been linked to exposure to highly pathogenic avian influenza. Northwest Naturals, an Oregon-based pet food company, is recalling a batch of its two pound Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after a cat that died of H5N1 avian influenza was linked to the product (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/pet-food-bird-flu-1.7419141)

Worms and Germs Blog has written an amazing article outlining what the veterinary community knows right now and precautions to keep our feline friends safe. We share their stance on raw food -
"My opinions on raw diets have been pretty clear all along. I don’t think there’s any evidence that raw diets have any health benefits over an appropriate cooked diet, but raw diets come with numerous infectious disease risks. I’ve seen enough dogs and cats (and sometimes owners) sickened from raw diets to be confident in that. At the same time, I’m a realist and know that some people will continue to feed pets raw diets regardless. That’s why we have a infosheet (see linked article for the link) about raw diets that includes ways to reduce the infectious disease risks for those who choose to feed them to their pets.

The current situation doesn’t really change anything for me. I’m still opposed to raw diets for pets, and this simply adds yet another layer of risk to pets and people that consume/feed them.

If someone is adamant that they are going to feed their pet a raw diet, here’s what I currently recommend:

- Avoid diets that contain poultry (including duck)
- Use a diet treated with high pressure pasteurization (realizing it reduces risk, but does not eliminate it)
- Take care to avoid cross contamination of human food, and use good food handling and hygiene practices (always)
- If your pet has been fed raw meat and gets sick, make sure your veterinarian knows about the diet so they can consider whether that might be relevant
- Pay attention to the news and recalls so that you can stop feeding a diet if there are any known issues (but realize that we don’t typically know about any issues until one or more animals gets really sick or dies from the diet)"

https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/2025/01/articles/animals/cats/h5n1-influenza-raw-diets-and-petsan-overview/.

Issues with raw diets and H5N1 influenza risk in cats (and dogs) have gotten a lot of attention in the last week or two. Like most emerging disease

**EDIT: The email successfully sent! If you did not receive it, please give us a call or send an email to update your contact record**

Tomorrow morning all of our clients SHOULD receive an email with some important clinic information about the holidays and early new year! If you are a client of ours and did NOT get an email, please email us at [email protected] so we can update your contact record appropriately.

A quick summary:
- We are closed Dec 21-Jan 5. Check your email for an afterhours contact number!
- Please get your prescription or food orders in by Wednesday this week (December 12) so we can make sure your items arrive before Christmas.
- If you have any things you are watching - give us a call as soon as possible. We are booking into the middle of next week already!
- Dr. Seaton will be out of town late January and early February. The clinic will be covered by a locum but there is no access to LARGE ANIMAL services during that time.

11/08/2024

This November Dr. Seaton is heading out of town for a couple of weekends to take continuing education courses in Small Animal and Equine Dentistry!

This means that the CLINIC WILL BE CLOSED Friday, November 15 and November 29th as well as Monday, December 2nd.

Please make sure that any on-going prescriptions will not run out during this time and that you have enough pet food!

Wow, what a fun and busy summer! (Please read to the end)

But as the summer starts to come to a close, we have had to say good bye to our amazing summer student Bethany Burnett and are preparing to say good bye to our lovely part-time vet Dr. Pat Burrage and wonderful assistant Kalia Muller.

This decrease in professional and support staff does mean that we have less availability for appointments on the small animal side of our schedule.

When you call our office, you will hear a change in the initial greeting letting you know that we are fully booked for our One-Time-Service appointments. Please respect this and the emotional energy it takes from our staff to have to turn down clients and pets that we really wish we could help. We will update our phone greeting based on our current short-term (2 week) schedule. If you are looking for a non-client appointment, please call and listen to our greeting to know if you should stay on the line or call back later.

The future of this much needed option relies on community understanding and support of our decisions regarding our schedule. We have said it before and we will say it again - 'If the candle burns from both ends, it will burn out.'

We cannot thank this town enough for the support, positive reviews, and understanding we have received during our first year of mixed animal practice. Thank YOU for your continued support and understanding. Please continue to check our phone line regarding our current availability for non-client appointments.

**We are fully booked at this time - any additional requests will be put on a short-notice cancelation list OR held for a future Smithers Trip Date**

We have had a number of requests for appointments in the Bulkley Valley this fall. We are planning a trip for September 13th and have space for 6-12 horses depending on the nature of the services requested.

We are still deciding between traveling to owner’s locations vs setting up at a central location. A final decision will be made based on owner requests and volume of appointments.

Please send an email with the subject - Smithers Appointment - to [email protected] if you would like to book with us! Preference will be given to those clients who have requested an appointment in advance and then will be booked in a first-come-first-served basis.

Wishing clear skies and safe travels for all humans and equestrians traveling to the fall fair next week!

At this time we are unable to offer mobile services for small animals (cats and dogs).

Today we got exciting news for pet parents nervous about the new border regulations for travel to the United States!

From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA):

“ We are pleased to share that the CFIA and CDC have agreed to updated requirements for Canadians. The highlights of these changes are as follows:

1) A bilateral export certificate has been negotiated between the CDC and CFIA.
The CFIA is no longer required to endorse every form; a licensed Canadian veterinarian will be the recognized authority.

2) Dogs entering the U.S. must have an International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-compliant or other universally readable microchip.

3)The export certificate is valid for multiple entries based on the duration of the rabies vaccination.

Please read the complete update for additional requirements on the CFIA website.

Please note: This is a fluid situation and additional changes are anticipated. Please check the CFIA website regularly for the most up-to-date information.”

Please give the clinic a call if you are planning to travel and do not have an ISO microchip with up-to-date Rabies vaccination!

A few scheduling updates from your friends at Mount Remo Vet!

This Friday and Saturday we are excited to have Stretch & Fetch Animal Rehabilitation Centre in our building doing rehabilitation and physiotherapy with a variety of canine patients from Terrace and surrounding area! Please arrive a few minutes early for your appointment and send them a text when you arrive.

Please give the clinic a call to book an appointment if there is anything you have been watching and waiting for it to get better ;) If your pet is on a long term medication, please make sure you will not run out during this time!

Thank you for your support this year! Stay tuned for more information on a celebration of 1 year of mixed animal medicine come September....
