I got a message from former high school friend, I don’t like to say old because that implies something HAHA! He mentioned that his wife told him a neighbour had a swarm of bees on their bush. So, right after I finished up at the office, I grabbed my gear and headed over to help them out. Thanks to Erin, Cecilia, Mr. Joe and my ol’ buddy Joe for letting me save and relocate another swarm of beneficial honeybees!

I received a call from Tawnia, who was a bit concerned. As it turns out, a honey bee swarm was resting in a Purple Leaf Plum tree in their front yard. A quick buzz out to Belle River and another swarm saved and relocated to safer conditions! Thanks for calling and for being a friend to the bees Tawnia!

While working in one of the hives today, I found the Queen and placed her in a clip, for safety’s sake, while I finished the inspection. You’ll see how all the bees swarm to the Queen in the clip—she can’t leave, but they can come and go because they’re smaller. Plus, you’ll notice them buzzing or fanning with their wings to let everyone know she’s doing okay by spreading her pheromones around, like the bee internet!

Hi bees, I was hoping you could consider placing your swarm a bit lower, maybe something below 25 feet up in a tree next time. That way, I’ll have an easier time rescuing you all! Much appreciated.
Just to give you an idea, that’s about the height of a 9-foot A-frame, and I’m on the top rung of a fully extended 18-foot ladder to get to another 6-1/2 feet up to the swarm cluster. Not to mention it was over 98°F with the humidex, what an afternoon! đŸ„”đŸ

With everyone busy planting their gardens this long weekend, let’s make sure our gardens are even more welcoming to pollinators! Besides planting some pretty flowers, think about adding easy-to-make water spots with gentle slopes. You could even set up a simple dish with rocks to keep them hydrated and safe from drowning.
