Tonight's dessert... My packs favorite treat! Banana, strawberries and blueberries. So good and so good for them! Keep in mind my dogs are fed a complete human food diet so if you choose to introduce them to new healthy food options treat them as you would a baby slow and one at a time to ensure it agrees with them. This particular mix is also great blended in the magic bullet with some plain yogurt and frozen in to ice cubes. A great sweet cool treat on a hot day!

There are many ideal times of the day to focus on training your K9 companion but we often miss the mark when it's right in front of us to reinforce positive behavior. Be aware and pay attention to these opportunities to train your dog with little effort and time. Praise good behavior with treats or love! It doesn't always have to be treats for reward, a simple good boy and scratch under the muzzle or body rub is usually just as effective for marking good behavior. Also remember to switch up the treats to keep the reward new and exciting! Reward the simple things like sitting before meal time, calm submissive behavior when meeting new friends, getting off the couch when company comes over, allowing you to go through the door first and asking them to follow. They aim to please so remember that and praise then when they do so!

With this summer heat comes the possibility of your K9 overheating. Since dogs do not sweat heat is released by panting and through their paws. A baby pool can be a wonderful way for your dog to cool themselves down. In emergency cases do not spray a dog with water to the back, this can cause the dog to go into shock. Drinking water, water on the paws, and cold water packs pressed under the front shoulder on the body part known as the brisket (where main arteries are located) are the best way to cool your companion down.

Went to Mc Gregor tonight and FYI the ticks are out in full force! None on my dog, but 25 minutes into my ride home I could feel something on my neck! It was a full grown tick looking for dinner! Before warned, this is going to be a bad season for the record books! Check yourself from head to toe, and be sure to wash clothes that have come into contact, to be sure that eggs and larvae don't live and spread!

Attention all doggy owners! I have clients who have confirmed that ticks are already out and biting this season. So brace yourself for a bad season.... Not always an advocate for all vaccines, but this year I am filling all my forest happy pups with whatever I can do to protect them. Also Lepto has been confirmed in our area of Essex County. Try to stop your K9 from drinking standing water, and always do a tick check when finished playing in grass and woods. Blue Dawn dish soap works very well and quickly to remove ticks. Apply liberally on tick and rub gently to have tick fall off of skin.

FYI- pure pumpkin is one thing all dog owners should have on hand at all times! It helps with all kinds of upset belly conditions. It helps calm diarrhea, and constipation. It's like "pepto bismol" for dogs. Also pedialyte is very helpful to get a sick dog who is not eating back on their paws and running again! If problem consists for more than 48hrs you should definitely consult a your vet.

Working at a Vets office I've heard all kinds of different reasons why the patient is nervous and scared on arrival. The most common is always "they don't like the car". The more we expose our pets too, the less likely it will make them anxious. Take you doggy for a car ride today! Reward them when they get in the car, and reward them when you return home. Keep in mind not to reward nervous behavior. Repitition and routine is the key to making this everyday action a positive experience!

An excited dog is an eager to please dog! Feed this excitement with positive energy! Use this excitement for the better by encouraging training at the time of excitement. Encourage a sit, a down, a spin, a rollover anything your pup already knows and introduce new steps into ever experience. 5 minutes a day can go a long way!!!! Tie some funny sayings into training for extra enjoyment... Such as "fist bump" for a high five, or "oh no, your on fire" for a roll over! Repitition and routine is the key to quality training!!!!
