Did you know that heartworm is transmitted through mosquitos? That means, if your dog spends any time outside then they are at risk of contracting heartworm. We would highly recommend keeping your furry companion on heartworm prevention throughout the mosquito season (typically from March/April through September/October).
Severity of heartworm disease in dogs will be related to the symptoms present. Symptoms of heartworm in dogs are related to the organs affected—the heart and lungs.
Symptoms often include: Cough, lethargy, exercise intolerance, collapse and in severe cases, death. Some dogs may show weight loss, difficulty breathing, and even excessive panting. If left untreated, dogs may go on to experience right-sided heart failure and ascites.
Heartworm is treatable! It is important to get a heartworm test done yearly at the beginning of the season so we know if we need to treat an infection before giving prevention. This test is simple, just a few drops of blood and results come back within 10 minutes!
