*Heartworm positive case*

Yesterday one of our RVTs noticed a suspicious suspect in a routine peripheral blood smear. The blood sample was sent to the lab and confirmed that the dog is heartworm positive.

The dog was confirmed to have not travelled outside the Ottawa area, so it was contracted in the city. Heartworm isn’t abundant in the area, but this is a reminder that it is still very much present in the community.

We don’t require 4dx tests (which tests for heartworm and 3 tick diseases) if the pet isn’t getting heartworm medication. This is a good reminder as to why we recommend annual heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick.
