Knowing whether your dog is at a healthy weight is more than just checking a number on a scale—it’s about assessing their overall body condition.

Obesity in dogs can greatly impact their overall health and shorten their lifespan. Overweight dogs can have extra strain on their ligaments and joints leading to issues with luxating patella.

Which is why it's important to feed the correct amount of food to your dog, limiting treats and facilitating enough activity to maintain a healthy weight. Most adult Yorkies need only 1/4 cup- 1/2 cup of food a day.

The most reliable method is the Body Condition Score (BCS), a hands-on and visual assessment tool. But for a quick home check, pet owners can use three simple techniques: the rib check, the waist view, and the profile check.

With light pressure, you should feel your dog’s ribs beneath a thin layer of fat—similar to the feeling of your knuckles.

From above, your dog should have an hourglass shape with a visible waist, and from the side, you should see a slight abdominal tuck behind the ribs.

We hope this helps families learn the correct way to feed their dog and to seek the optimal weight for their dog.

So things don't always go as you plan, this little guy had a waiting family for him when there was a serious flaw discovered at his vet appointment.

He was born with an elongated palate making breathing noisy and swallowing a challenge for him. It may be something that improves as he grows or it may worsen over time, there's no way to know.

It's a very rare flaw to appear in Yorkies & Biewers, it tends to be more prevalent in brachycephalic dog breeds. Eventually he may need an expensive surgery to repair it, so because of this uncertainty we felt that it would be best if he stayed here.

We brought him into this world and we are responsible to give him the absolute best. So without further ado.... Introducing Chip! Our very first puppy that will be only a pet here at SRY.
