Executive Director Keith Sullivan, Research and Development Coordinator Darrell Green, and Work Term Student Jenna Hayden recently traveled to St. Mary’s Bay to take part in a hands-on seaweed harvest with HoldFast NL, a NL seaweed company. Over the course of three hours, the team harvested at two key coastal locations, one in St. Mary’s and another in Mall Bay. The experience offered valuable, firsthand insight into the province’s emerging seaweed sector and highlighted the importance of sustainable harvesting practices in supporting Newfoundland and Labrador’s growing blue economy.

Yesterday, NAIA students Jayda and Cassidy visited the St. Albans Public Library to do a book read and a few marine themed activities with the youth that missed their visit last week. They read Charley a Day in The Bay and completed an activity that taught them about the importance of keeping our oceans free of marine debris.

The foreign-funded, international activist Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) continues to mislead the public regarding aquaculture.

They are now paying people to protest against south coast jobs and seafood production! They continue to attack coastal people working in Newfoundland and Labrador. ASF interference in NL has gone too far. ASF are organizing a protests in NL communities and are paying people to participate.

They are clearly attempting to manipulate a federal government process, namely the Parks Canada NMCA (National Marine Conservation), to close off massive ocean areas to sustainable seafood production including fishing and aquaculture.

They continue to spend millions of foreign dollars to mislead the public. One example is falsely linking salmon to cancer and autism. This is irresponsible but consistent with the sensationalist style of ASF.

Earlier this year NAIA highlighted concerns about ASF Disinformation: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CZFQqVS6AqDYE6GfZnVUJjngDeYjrP8q/view

Parks Canada continues to mislead stakeholders by indicating they only want smaller zones fully within the NMCA protected when their guiding Policy on the Establishment and Management of National Marine Conservation Areas clearly directs, “Parks Canada works towards the long-term goal of placing the majority of each NMCA in fully protected zones.”

The impact of such a massive NMCA would be devastating, resulting in boats being unable to fish, aquaculture shut out, and eliminating or severely discouraging investment in the region.

The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association is disappointed with the decision of the Federal Government to not include COMMERCIAL traffic in the discounted fares for crossings on the Marine Atlantic Port Aux Basques and Argentia routes. On behalf of our seafood farming companies, who contribute significantly to Canada’s GDP and food sovereignty, we would like to request that you reconsider this action and add discounts for commercial crossings.
