One of the hardest conversations we have as groomers is explaining why we can’t simply brush out matting.
Please know that when we recommend shaving a matted coat, it’s never because we’re taking the easy way out. It’s because we’re putting your dog’s comfort, health, and safety first.
Matting is much more than a few tangles. When a coat becomes heavily matted, the hair tightens against the skin like a blanket that continues to shrink. It restricts airflow, traps moisture, dirt, and bacteria, and can cause irritation, hot spots, bruising, and even skin infections.
Many pet parents don’t realize that the skin underneath a matted coat is often extremely fragile. It can become dry, dehydrated, inflamed, and sensitive from being covered and unable to breathe properly. Sometimes we don’t know the condition of the skin until the mats are removed.
What makes this especially difficult is that dematting is not a painless process. Every brush stroke pulls on the skin. Every tug can cause discomfort. For a severely matted dog, hours of brushing isn’t kindness, it’s often painful and stressful.
Even shaving a matted dog requires incredible care. The mats are attached tightly to the skin, and removing them can still create pulling and discomfort. The risk of nicks, cuts, bruising, and skin irritation increases significantly because we are often working with skin we cannot fully see beneath the matting.
As groomers, we never enjoy sending a dog home shorter than their family hoped for. We know how disappointing it can be to lose that fluffy coat you’ve been growing out. But our job is not just to make dogs look beautiful, it’s to advocate for their well being.
When we recommend a fresh start, it comes from compassion, not judgment.
We understand that life gets busy. Brushing can be challenging. Dogs can be wiggly. Matting can happen faster than many people realize.
Our goal is never to shame pet parents. Our goal is to help educate, support, and create a maintenance plan that keeps your dog comfortable, healthy, and mat free moving forward.
Because at the end of the day, your dog’s comfort will always matter more than their haircut.
