Elders Equine is accepting applications for an equine veterinarian with special interest in reproduction and sports medicine.

No AI bots writing this ad. We are a wholesome, traditional western Canadian equine practice with over 60 years in the business. A trust built client base and an amazing equine community. We are a family of people sharing a common interest in horses.

Elders Equine is a progressive full-service equine referral hospital and primary care ambulatory practice located just west of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Our 5 veterinarian practice has specialists in equine surgery and an anesthesiologist.

Our new associate would have an interest in repro/therio, sports medicine, race track medicine and general equine medicine.

Experience with mare and stallion reproductive care needed. Embryo transfer, semen freezing/shipping experience is an asset. Experience with TB and SB racing are an asset but not required.
Our practice sees a full variety of horses from English and Western disciplines and everything in between. Access to full reproductive suite with lab and indoor collecting station. For the sports medicine enthusiast there is access to advanced imaging training and caseload including in house CT and MRI as well as a regenerative sports medicine suite of options - PRP, stems, IRAP, shockwave, cytokines, amnion and all the toys etc.

The candidate would join our team in providing the highest quality of equine veterinary care with a commitment to learning and teaching. Our new associate will have an opportunity to grow, learn and teach as we regularly have external students, clinical rotation students, interns, residents and upgrading knowledge veterinarians in our program. We take a team approach to our cases with RVT’s and VA’s available to help ensure that our patients receive the best of care.

We are looking forward to meeting our new associate who will share this same approach.

The candidate will need to have a DVM degree or equivalent with full veterinary licensure capability in Manitoba. New grads welcome. Salary will be competitive and account for experience. Benefits include fully paid group health and dental program, AAEP membership, MVMA licensure. RRSP (retirement saving program) with matching program and generous CE allowance available with 1 year vested.

Our hearts are with our colleagues and friends with the loss of another veterinarian from our veterinary community and family

We’re deeply saddened to hear of the loss felt within the veterinary community this week. Our hearts are with everyone who is grieving.

As veterinarians, we are more than twice as likely to have suicidal thoughts, and one in five Canadian veterinarians and technologists have reported having thoughts about taking their own life. (CVMA)

As a community, it’s important that we continue to look out for one another, offer support, and remind each other that no one has to carry this weight alone.

Vaccines - Protecting your horse

Vaccination is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your horse’s health. With so many options, it can be hard to know what your horse needs. Here at Elders Equine, we’re happy to help create the right vaccination plan for your equine companion.

💉 Core Vaccines
Core vaccines are considered essential for every horse, regardless of lifestyle. These protect against diseases that are widespread, often fatal, or pose a health risk to both horses and humans. These five vaccines include:
• Tetanus – Ubiquitous in the environment and the bacteria release potent toxins that enter the body through open wounds. Often fatal in unvaccinated horses.
• Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis – Mosquito-borne diseases that cause brain inflammation and neurological disease. Highly preventable in vaccinated horses.
• West Nile Virus – Another mosquito-borne virus causing neurologic disease. Vaccination is the most effective preventative measure.
• Rabies – Always fatal and potentially transmissible to humans. Note: Rabies must be administered by a veterinarian

💉 Risk-Based Vaccines
These vaccines are tailored to each horse and there is no “one-size-fits-all” program. These vaccines are recommended based on your horse’s lifestyle, travel, and exposure risk.
• Influenza (“Flu”) – Highly contagious respiratory virus with prevention relying on vaccination and strict biosecurity.
• Equine Herpes Virus (EHV / “Rhino”) – Common and highly contagious virus which can cause respiratory disease, fever, abortions and potentially serious neurological issues. Note: There is currently no equine vaccine approved to protect against the neurological form of EHV.
• Strangles – A highly contagious respiratory disease most commonly affecting young horses, but horses of any age can be infected.
• Others – Lyme, Potomac Horse Fever, Botulism, Leptospirosis, Anthrax
