🐾 After-Hours Pet Support—Talk to a Real Vet Nurse 🐾
Did you know that Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital offers an after-hours service, Pet Nurse, to help give you peace of mind at any time of day?

Worried about your pet after hours?
When you call our clinic after hours, you’ll be connected with a Qualified Vet Nurse (The British equivalent of an AHT) who can:

✔️ Talk through your pet’s symptoms
✔️ Help determine next steps
✔️ Let you know if it’s an emergency

No guessing. No panic scrolling.
❌ No need to ask Dr Google.

📞 Just call our clinic— 604-898-9089 - expert help is only a phone call away.

Once connected, they will listen to your pets’ symptoms and give you advice on what to do next and whether or not your pet is experiencing an emergency. They can let you know if you need to schedule an appointment with us and what to do in the meantime. This is a great service to offer peace of mind, and to make sure that your pet is getting the attention it may need as soon as it is needed.

Your pet’s health. Real advice. Real peace of mind. 💙

Wolves in BC caught on camera using a rope and float to pull up a crab trap — actual tool use in the wild.

And honestly… are we even surprised?

If our dogs at home can figure out how to:
-manipulate us into giving “just one more treat,”
-nudge the leash at the exact time they want a walk,
-guilt-stare us into surrendering the couch,
-or fake-out bark just to get our attention…
…then of course their wild cousins are out there inventing clever ways to access snacks of their own.

This wolf didn’t just stumble on food — it dragged the buoy to shore, grabbed the line, and hauled the trap up like a seasoned fisher. That’s intelligence, observation, and strategy at work.

Canines aren’t just smart — they’re resourceful and opportunistic, whether they’re in our living rooms or along the BC coastline.

Dogs manipulate humans.
Wolves manipulate crab traps.
Same energy.

Check out the video posted with the article from The Washington Post.

Video from the coast of British Columbia may be the first documented instance of a wild wolf using a tool, according to the researchers who published it on Monday.

It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall at the age of 91.

At Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital, we feel her loss personally — she was a champion not just for wild animals, but for the bond between all species. Her life’s work challenged us to see animals as individuals with emotions and dignity, and to act with compassion toward every creature great and small.

🕊️ In her honour, we pledge to continue caring for animals with the respect, empathy, and commitment that she inspired in the world.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” — Dr. Jane Goodall

May her legacy guide us toward a more compassionate, respectful world for animals and people alike.

🧡 Clinic Closed – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation🧡

On Tuesday, September 30th, our clinic will be closed in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an opportunity to honour the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never came home. We encourage our community to take time to learn, reflect, and support Indigenous voices—especially here on the traditional territory of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.

We will reopen on Wednesday, October 1st with regular hours.

For emergencies while we’re closed, please contact Mountainside 24 hr Animal Emergency. Alternatively, if you call our clinic during off hours, you will have the option to speak with a registered Vet Nurse, who will be able to evaluate your situation and give clear next steps, including whether or not you should head to Mountainside emergency.
Let’s walk the path of truth and reconciliation—together. 🧡

🐾 Air Quality Alert: Protect Your Pets During Wildfire Smoke 🐾

When smoke from forest fires impacts our air, it affects our pets too. Just like us, animals can experience coughing, eye irritation, difficulty breathing, and fatigue from poor air quality.

👉 Precautions to Keep Pets Safe:
Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
Avoid outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
Close windows/doors and use air purifiers if available.
Provide fresh, clean water to help soothe airways.
Watch for warning signs: excessive coughing, wheezing, nasal discharge, weakness, or disorientation.
If you notice any of these symptoms or your pet is struggling to breathe or seems unusually lethargic, contact us right away. Alternatively if it is after hours, call our clinic and you will have the option to speak with a registered Vet Nurse who can help you determine next steps, including whether or not you should head to Mountainside Emergency in North Vancouver.

For more information regarding air quality in Squamish, see the attached link from the Government of Canada.

🔥🐾 Hot Weather Warning for Pet Owners! 🐾🔥

As we experience another heatwave here in Squamish, we want to remind everyone of the dangers high heat can pose for your pets.

Heat Dangers to Watch Out For:
Heatstroke (can happen in minutes!)
Burned paw pads from hot pavement
Dehydration
Difficulty breathing, especially for flat-faced breeds

✅ How to Keep Your Pet Safe:
Always be sure your pets have access to shade and water when hanging around outdoors.
Be sure to avoid hot pavement as it can cause burns on your pet’s paw pads. Try walking on the grass, or go for walks in the early morning or later in the evening when it is cooler. Test the pavement with your hand, if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them.
As always NEVER leave your pet unattended in a vehicle even with the windows cracked for any length of time. The temperature in a vehicle can skyrocket to dangerous temperatures within minutes. It is NEVER worth it.

If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact us ASAP.

Excessive panting or drooling, rapid heartbeat, bright red gums or tongue, lethargy or weakness, vomiting or diarrhea, uncoordinated movement or collapse, glazed eyes or confusion, seizures or unconsciousness (in severe cases) These could all be a sign of heatstroke.

Some of the signs of dehydration can include, dry nose or gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, and decreased appetite or urination.

We are here to keep your pets happy and healthy this summer season! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us by calling, emailing or even texting. If you call us after hours, you will have the option to be transferred to a registered Vet Nurse, who can help you through the next steps, including whether or not you should head to Mountainside in North Vancouver.

-Your team at Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital, wishing you and your furry friends, a stellar (and safe) summer season.
