🌱 Let’s Talk Seed and Plant Oils in Pet Food 🌱

Have you ever heard that seed oils are horrible for pets and should always be avoided? Here’s the science.

When seed and plant oils are eliminated from a pet’s diet, you are likely removing a key essential fatty acid, linoleic acid (LA).

Linoleic acid, found in oils like sunflower oil, plays a critical role in skin health. It is a major building block of ceramides, which help maintain the cornified lipid envelope, also known as your pet’s skin barrier.

That barrier is what keeps moisture in and irritants out. Without enough LA, the skin barrier can become compromised, leading to itchy, flaky, unhealthy skin.

So instead of fearing all seed oils, the better question is this:
Is the formulation balanced and functional?
Does it supply essential nutrients like LA in the right ratios?

Nutrition is nuanced. Don’t let blanket statements lead to blanket deficiencies.

Spread The Word - The Truth About Liver Treats for Dogs 🐾

Beef liver is packed with nutrients, but did you know it can be too much of a good thing?

Liver is extremely high in vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that isn’t easily flushed from the body like water-soluble vitamins. Because commercial diets are already balanced for vitamin A, adding concentrated sources (like liver treats) can push dogs over safe limits and lead to toxicity over time.

Regular supplementation (frequent liver treats or cod liver oil) can push levels beyond this threshold, increasing toxicity risk (Fascetti & Delaney, 2012).

While a little liver here and there is fine, moderation is key. Make sure your dog is on a complete and balanced diet with a Rise Wellness Plan 🐾

Omega-3s for Weight Loss in Dogs? 🐶🐟

You heard that right! Omega-3 fatty acids may do more than support skin, coat, and joint health - they could also aid in weight loss.

Research suggests omega-3s “may increase energy expenditure through the upregulation of mitochondrial uncoupling protein.” In one study, dogs on a calorie-restricted diet experienced enhanced weight loss when supplemented with omega-3s (Ishioka et al., 2004).

Not all omega-3 sources are created equal, though. Be cautious of heavy metals and choose ethical manufacturing facilities when sourcing. Curious what Rise recommends or looking for a supplement plan? Head to the link in my bio!

Why doesn’t Rise formulate homemade diets?

Years ago, our options as pet parents were extremely limited—mostly just kibble and canned food. Today, we’re lucky to have a wide variety of formulations and processing techniques, including freeze-dried, kibble, canned, dehydrated, air-dried, baked, steamed, cooked, and raw. With so many options available, commercial diets can now be customized into complete nutrition plans, like the Rise Wellness Plan.

This approach saves pet parents hours of time by eliminating the need to prepare meals from scratch, while also providing peace of mind. When properly developed into a complete nutrition plan, pets not only get a balanced diet for their life stage, but their nutrition is further optimized to support diagnoses and longevity. 💪

That said, not all commercially formulated foods are created equal. I’ve spent countless hours evaluating formulas and nutritional analyses to see if they meet my standards for Rise approval. Many—too many to count—have failed. 🙅‍♀️

🐾 Welcome to another Rise pack feature! Today, meet Sasha, a determined pup living with hip dysplasia and arthritis, whose wellness journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Her family came to me looking for support with her raw diet. Together, we reworked Sasha’s plan to ensure it was not only complete and balanced but also supportive of her mobility, weight goals, and energy needs. We introduced supplements, focused on joint health, and incorporated some kibble to round things out and give Sasha a quick and easy option for road trips.

Within weeks, Sasha’s energy levels improved and her family could see she was thriving. Helping dogs like Sasha live fuller, more comfortable lives is exactly why I do this work.

If your pup has mobility challenges or you’re overwhelmed trying to balance raw food alone, I’m here to help. Let’s build a plan that works for both of you. 🐾

🐾 Welcome to another Rise pack feature! Today, meet Syl, a sweet snow-coloured fluff ball who was originally on a Rise plan for consistent GI issues and mild allergies. In recent months, a degenerative bone condition was discovered, and we’ve been working to support this diagnosis with caloric intake adjustments, further optimizing the diet, and targeting the supplement plan to hyper-focus on this condition.

With a custom Rise Wellness Plan, we’ve been able to address Syl’s digestive health while supporting her body through the challenges ahead. Her family shared: “We have loved working with Aleah. Her knowledge about pet nutrition is so helpful in a world where there are so many voices and marketing ads directed at us consumers. It has been invaluable learning from Aleah and bouncing things off of her with our dog. She has helped our dog’s chronic GI issues and is continuing to help us as we navigate a degenerative bone disease with our pup. We feel so lucky to have her in our corner supporting us!”

I’m honored to be part of Syl’s journey and can’t wait to see her continue to thrive. If your pup is facing health challenges or you want to build a foundation for lifelong wellness, I’d love to help craft the perfect plan. 🐾

The Power of Green-Lipped Mussel for Joint Health 🦪

Green-lipped mussel (GLM) isn’t just another trendy supplement—it’s a powerhouse of joint-supporting nutrients!

GLM naturally contains glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, key compounds known to support mobility and reduce osteoarthritis progression. What makes GLM unique?

✅ Rich in Omega-3s – With a natural 1:10 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, it delivers EPA & DHA, powerful anti-inflammatory fatty acids.
✅ 5-Lipoxygenase Inhibitor – This helps block inflammatory pathways, reducing joint pain and stiffness.
✅ Packed with Nutrients – Contains amino acids (glutamine, methionine), vitamins E & C, and essential minerals (zinc, copper, manganese), all working synergistically to support cartilage and joint function.

Research suggests that the combination of omega-3s and these nutrients may help slow the progression of osteoarthritis (Fascetti & Delaney, 2012).

If your dog struggles with mobility, stiffness, or aging joints, GLM may be a natural and effective way to keep them moving comfortably.
