“Twas the night before deer season, and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
All the guns were oiled, and in the cases with care,
In hopes that deer season would soon be there.”

For many people (including myself) tomorrow
morning is more exciting than Christmas. Best of luck to all the hunters hitting the woods tomorrow, be safe, shoot straight but most of all have a damn good time!!
I will be looking for more replacement deer capes this season as my stock was all used up last year. I will have to skin out the head and return the antlers to you, mature bucks preferred when possible!
A couple things NOT TO DO after harvesting your deer (or bear). This will ensure a much better mount in the end😊
Don’t drag behind a fourwheeler
No ropes around the neck
Don’t hang upside down for an extended period of time if the animal hasn’t had time to drain (fluid will build up in the face)
Avoid cutting too high on the brisket and in the armpit area when caping(diagram provided below).
Use your best judgement if the weather is warm and freeze the cape if necessary. It is a parichable item, treat the cape as you would a steak you’re going to eat.
DO NOT slit the throat. This is not necessary and makes for a very difficult (and expensive) repair job.
If needed, I have freezer space for about 4-5 capes with heads attached if anyone is in a bind.
Contact me to arrange drop off.
For the bears, refer to the skinning diagram below. Keep the head and paws attached to the hide, try to keep your cuts as straight and centred as possible (especially for rugs).
Small mammals, including coyotes, I would ask that they come in whole if possible (if for just a tanned hide, they can be skinned out).
If the butcher has the tag for the harvested animal, always mark down the tag number and keep it with the hide/cape. A taxidermist will require the tag number for your animal.
This season I will not be taking on any waterfowl due to my current backlog. That being said, I can connect you with another great taxidermist for your bird work, just shoot me a message.
Also, as a reminder, I do not offer any skull/bone work, pet taxidermy (dogs and cats) and am also not offering any classes or mentorship opportunities at this time but would be happy to refer you to someone who can!
I will be accepting, deer, large and small mammals, limited bear rugs and limited tanned hides (wall hanger quality, not garment quality).
The best way to reach me this week would be via text as calls don’t always come through 613-897-3596. Especially if you have any questions regarding caping your deer, I would be happy to walk you through it over the phone if you need! There are no stupid questions, I would much rather someone ask than make a mistake that they regret.
Please be patient with my response time and I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can. When I’m back, you guys will be bombarded with a whole bunch of finished mount photos 👌
Thank you again to all my customers near and far and I’m looking forward to hearing your crazy stories and seeing some new faces this year😁
