I’m tentatively looking for some help and advice.
The problem I’m having is that my car keeps crashing into things for no reason.
It doesn’t happen all the time but last week it went out of control, mounted the pavement and hit a bollard. There’s no serious damage but I need to get to the bottom of what’s going on. I’ve been driving for 5 years, so I know its not me, but now, I’m beginning to completely lose my nerve. Yesterday for no reason it reversed into a lamp post and frightened the life out of me. Can anybody help. I’m at my wits end.

I’ve only owned this car for three weeks and have spoken to the dealer I bought it from but he was adamant it’s never done it before.
A friend of mine suggested having a local mechanic look at it, which I did.
I took it to the garage in my village and they went over everything with a fine-tooth comb.
They had it for several hours, took it for a test drive and embarrassingly everything was absolutely fine and the damn thing didn’t do it with them!
I explained that its intermittent and unpredictable which is why it’s so frustrating. They just looked at me as if I was insane. Damned car really showed me up and I certainly won’t be taking it there again.

Then, literally, on the way home it happened again! It hit the gatepost as I drove into my drive. I couldn’t believe it! I was so angry with the mechanic for letting me drive home in a dangerous car.

On the internet I found another mechanic who says he specialises in this sort of thing and he’s going to do a proper work through of all the potential things it could be. He suggested starting with checking the brakes and said although they look good he’d advise doing a complete overhaul, changing the callipers, and the pads and discs to eliminate this as the potential cause of all the crashing. This makes perfect sense to me.

He was honest and up front with everything, explaining this probably wouldn’t be a complete solution but was still definitely worth doing anyway. So I agreed. He had the car for months but I didn’t mind because at least, finally somebody was doing something!
Once all that work was completed, he suggested, as a precaution, it would be a good idea to have a look at the steering next. I was so grateful to find someone who knew what they were doing and was able to explain everything and offer a complete action plan.

Over the next week the mechanic set to work replacing the steering rack, steering column and even fitted a new steering wheel which he said he’d throw in for free
He was so helpful and kind.

I paid the bill drove home and everything was fine for 3 weeks but then unbelievably it happened again with me narrowly missing a pedestrian and hitting a wall in a car park.

Its so frustrating. I don’t know what to do next. I love this car so much. I’ve spent hours washing and polishing it, getting it regularly serviced, keeping it garaged, cleaning the inside and everything.
I’ve spent so much money but I’m now too afraid to drive it and I’m thinking of giving up driving altogether. It’s heart breaking.

It’s a petrol car but a friend of mine suggested running it on diesel to see if that works. I even had a friend suggest plugging it into an electric charging point which I’m going to try at the weekend.
I’ve even tried parking it up for three months to see if everything will reset
but it’s just the same and possibly even worse!

Can anyone recommend an online mechanic’s course I could subscribe to.

I’ve tried absolutely everything and now I’m thinking the best thing to do is to send the car to the scrap heap to be crushed so that it doesn’t hurt anyone. I feel it’s the only ethical thing left to do.

I don’t want to give the car away or send it to an auction. The thought of it being out there in the world just left on a forecourt for the next unsuspecting driver would be unbearable. I couldn’t live with myself if anything happened.

Has anybody got any suggestions
Thanks

*** SAFETY FIRST ***

ALWAYS, Always, always check the lead rope tension when using any “safety tie” device before walking away from your horse.

Case in point:
Helping a client with a trailer loading issue on Friday.
During the preload check of the trailer, I came across an interesting situation.
She had two good Blocker safety ties properly positioned in the trailer with a lead rope already attached to each one. ✅
Out of habit, I grabbed the lead rope on the first one and gave it a quick pull test, but that rope would not slide as it should ❌
Then the pull test on the 2nd lead rope failed to slide as well ❌
Since I had my own halter and lead in my hand, I switched out her leads with mine, and both safety ties worked as they should. ✅

SO, while it “appeared” that she was very proactive in safety precautions, in actuality she was Not.
This would equate to having a Fire Extinguisher hanging by the barn door that looked proactive, but is not in good working order.
Or a Smoke Alarm that is never regularly checked.

ALWAYS, Always, always perform a pull test on your lead rope when using any type of safety tie.
