Sharing this page for Diabetic Alert Dog ( D.A.D) owner/ handler trainers like me. Lunaβs alerts are great but Flora needs a nose boop instead of that damn paw raking me for everything. Lol
Well it wasn't completely planned, but we are hosting a brand new class at the last minute, and it's a class we haven't ever had before - diabetic alert training, but with a nudge (aka a 'boop') alert!
We will meet December through February, on Saturdays at 12pm EST via Google Meet. (Although all classes are recorded so if you ever need to miss one, you can watch class throughout the week when you have time) Anyone with a food motivated dog who wants to train diabetic alerts can join. Information and enrollment are here: https://www.mddogs.org/virtual-group-class.html
Some more details:
Our class and all our materials focus on teaching a paw alert, as that is honestly just easiest. But in some cases a nudge can be downright handy - it's better for dogs who are naturally very paw oriented, and it's better for those who are training the dog to alert for a child because then there's no risk of the dog accidentally hurting them with those enthusiastic alerts. And sometimes, it's a better option just for those who don't want a dog scratching their leg to tell them to check their blood sugar.
So we're hosting an entire class that will teach the nudge alert! We don't probably plan on having these very often since paw alerts are simpler, so if you'd like to teach a nudge alert we'd love to have you enroll this Winter! Once you sign up we'll send you the first batch of training supplies you'll need to get started. Comment or DM any questions, and feel free to share away with anyone you think could benefit from training their dog to alert to low and high blood sugars with a nose boop this winter!
