North West Animal Shelter

We are a registered charity. Our mandate is to operate an animal shelter to serve the Bulkley Valley, to rehome abused and abandoned animals.

What do you actually do for animals? We work with the Town of Smithers to rehome impounded dogs that are not claimed. We foster and adopt rescue dogs and cats both locally and throughout BC and Alberta. We have sent dogs to new homes as far away as Philidelphia and Juno. We fund raise to make sure our programs are funded and money is available to operate the shelter. We provide outreach to the com

munity by visiting schools and providing education about animal welfare. We offer spay and neutering assistance program to those who would otherwise not be able to afford the full cost. We have formed relationships with nine outside rescue groups who post available animals on their web sites, and/or take them into their programs, or connect us directly to adoptive families. We assist to screen potential adopters. We assist with photos, transportation to the airport and to veterinary appointments. We help to assess, exercise, train, and bathe rescued dogs.

THANK YOU

We want to send a huge, heartfelt thank you to Dorothy from Webster's K-9 Grooming for the amazing work she did on the little found dog with all the mats. Dorothy saw our found post she immediately reached out to offer a free grooming to get the little dog comfortable and squeezed her in as quickly as possible. Not only is this little dog comfortable now but she is also absolutely adorable. We are now working to get the little lady's medical needs addressed.

FOR ADOPTION: CASH

CASH is the last of our "Musical Icon Pups" still looking for his happily ever after! This stunning boy is 3.5 months old and beyond ready to be settled in his forever home.

Socialization & Temperament

Cash grew up in a foster home where he was exposed to other dogs, cats, goats, and horses—he is excellent with all of them! He is also very gentle with children and would make a wonderful family companion.

Size & Energy

Mother: 55 lbs (Suspected Australian Shepherd mix).

Father: Unknown, but must have been much larger as Cash is on track to mature to 80 lbs or more.

Energy Level: Low-to-Medium.

Cash is an extremely calm and gentle pup. He has bouts of playful puppy energy where he loves to chase, tug toys, or wrestle with his dog friends, but he also loves to spend hours soaking up the warm sun or snuggling with his favorite people. He will enjoy accompanying his family camping, fishing, hiking, or going for walks and leisurely bike rides.

Training & Health

House Training: He is doing well with his kennel training and goes to the bathroom outdoors whenever he gets the chance. He still cannot "hold it" as long as a mature dog and will need regular breaks to stay clean indoors.

Manners: He has been fairly non-destructive with his toys and is learning to walk well on a leash.

Grooming: He has had a couple of baths and nail trims and handled them like a true gentleman.

Vet Care: He is up to date on vaccinations and parasite control and will come with a neuter contract in place.

FOR ADOPTION: MAGNUM

Magnum is a stunning, two-year-old male searching for a forever family that prizes cuddles and companionship. This handsome fella is friendly and affectionate with everyone he meets, including respectful children.

While he has a fun, playful side, he is always down for a snuggle. Magnum comes to us from a home with many other cats and has proven to do well with all the feline friends he’s met so far at the shelter. Because of this, we believe he would easily adjust to a home with another friendly cat.

Key Details:

Dog Compatibility: Magnum has had limited experience with dogs, but he has been open to calm, respectful canine companions. He could likely learn to live with the right dog!

Lifestyle: He is super fun and interactive. He would thrive in a home where someone is around to spend quality time with him often.

Environment: He is doing well as an indoor-only cat, but he would also enjoy a "catio" or access to a safe indoor/outdoor environment.

Health: Magnum is neutered, vaccinated, tattooed, and up-to-date on all parasite control.

FOR ADOPTION: KIA

Kia is a sweet and easy-going 6-month-old female who will effortlessly fit into almost any family dynamic. This lovely little lady is friendly and affectionate with people of all ages; she loves to play, but is always just as happy to settle in for a cuddle.

Social & Personality

Kia has been phenomenal with the other cats at the shelter. She enjoys playing with the high-energy, rowdy cats but knows how to respect the boundaries of the calmer residents.

During her time in foster care, she lived with a large, playful young dog and grew to really enjoy his company. Because of this, we believe she would do very well in a home with a friendly, dog-savvy companion.

Health History

While in foster care, Kia battled feline coronavirus, which is essentially the "cat cold."

The Facts: Roughly 90% of all cats have been exposed to or are carriers of feline coronavirus.

Kia’s Journey: Kia and her littermates were more significantly affected because they contracted it as newborns before their immune systems were fully developed.

Current Status: Kia is now completely healthy and ready for her forever home!

Lifestyle & Care

Kia has lived strictly indoors since she was three weeks old. She would thrive continuing this lifestyle, though she would likely enjoy a "catio" or learning to go for harnessed walks. She could also transition to an indoor/outdoor lifestyle if the environment is safe.

It's time for a new banner photo contest! We know we've done it before but we just love the theme "May Flowers". So.lets see those NWAS Alumni amongst the spring flowers. Maybe the are i doors enjoying a bouquet or the view out the window, maybe they are outdoors fully emerged in the flowes, we want to see it all. The photo with the most reactions by 10pm tonight will be our new banner photo.

FOR ADOPTION: ARYA

ARYA is a gentle and charming male, approximately one year old, who is looking for a forever family to treasure him.

Arya is not flamboyant; he doesn’t put on a show to get your attention, but he is always there, ready to snuggle or play whenever you are. He is a gentle guy who gets along well with people of all ages, including kind children. If you are gentle, he will match your kindness and shower you with love.

Arya has previously lived with a dog, and we are told they were very good together. He has been a bit apprehensive of the dogs we’ve introduced him to so far, so we suggest a very calm canine or one uninterested in cats as a good match.

Despite not living with other cats previously, Arya has been fantastic with the other residents here at the shelter. He is on the submissive side with his feline friends but will jump into play mode when the mood strikes. He has been so patient that we are now using him as our "test cat" when newcomers arrive!

FOR ADOPTION: SCHMIDT

Schmidt is a handsome, approximately 2-year-old male looking for an interactive forever family. This social boy came into our care after his owner suddenly passed away, and he is ready to find his next great adventure.

Personality & Temperament

Schmidt is a friendly, confident, and personable cat who enjoys everything life has to offer. From deep cuddles to high-energy playtime and, of course, a good meal—Schmidt is always "all in."

Kids: He has been fantastic with people of all ages, including children. If your kids love to play, he could be their new BFF; once everyone has burned off their energy, he makes the perfect snuggle buddy.

Other Cats: Schmidt arrived with injuries from a past cat fight, which initially made us nervous about how he would react to others. However, after healing from his injuries and neuter surgery, he pleasantly surprised us. He has been socialized with cats of both genders, multiple ages, and various personalities, doing wonderfully with all of them.

Dogs: While he didn't live with a dog in his previous home, he has been open to the idea of calm and respectful pooches.

Lifestyle Needs

Schmidt has lived an indoor/outdoor lifestyle and would do well continuing that in a safe environment. However, he is adaptable! He could also adjust to:
