At Irvine Creek Hay Sales & Feedneeds, we use sensory analysis to grade our hay.
We use the following criteria:

• Colour
• Smell
• Maturity
• Texture
• Weathering
• Contamination ( eg. weeds, dirt)

A combination of these factors will determine the grading. For example, a hay cut at the right time of maturity, may have some weathering factors that will downgrade it, but likely still has a better nutritional value than hay baled past maturity date.

Horses often have different criteria resulting from their nutritional needs, so a hay graded lower, can still be a good hay; green doesn’t matter as much to horses.

IRVINE CREEK FARMS sometimes takes core samples from different areas of a stack to form a representative sample to base a grade, as nutrient levels can be affected by varying soils and topography (low or high areas). We generally do not send hay out for lab analysis as this is time consuming and expensive, but customers are welcome to.

Now available, Timothy hay at $5.50/bale in the yard. This is a nice hay with less colour.

FREE CHOICE MINERALS: A NECESSARY, BUT NOT COMMON PRACTISE OF GOOD HORSEKEEPING
Salt and mineral licks are designed for cow tongues and while horses may spend a lot of time at the lick, they have a hard time meeting their daily requirement of 15ml of salt. Along with the salt lick, many conscientious horse owners put out a mineral block or tub. These blocks and tubs often hold the minerals together with molasses. For the foundered, insulin resistant, or cushings horse, this is way too much sugar.
Minerals are a necessary part of a horse’s diet. While good hay or forage meets generally meets these demands, there are times when it does not. Having free choice salt and minerals available for browsing as needed, meets a horse’s feed needs.
But, how do you feed free choice minerals? A lot of horse owners will add minerals and loose salt to their daily feed ration of non-hay nutrients. But if you have a lot horses and they are on hay/forage only, supplementing provides some challenges. First of all you need a covered container that the horse can have free access to. I generally use bull mineral feeders, available from a farm supply store.
They generally run in the range of $160 -$200. Or, you can build your own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlnDfWWeJd8 provides an excellent how-to video.

I have been filling my mineral feeders with a vitamin/mineral pre-mix, yeast, flax, & salt, with amounts and proportions calculated by an equine nutritionist for years. However, I’ve found M-P3 minerals from to be a cost efficient and time saving alternative to buying and mixing 4 big bags of supplementation. M-P3 contains vegetable oil, replacing flax to address my horses’ Omega 3 & 6 needs (immunity booster), as well as yeast; for improved digestion and vitamin/mineral absorption. M-P3 minerals are designed to be fed free choice, but can also be fed individually.
I mix M-P3 with 1:3 ratio of loose salt. I also put a salt block out, as I find the horses will often use it out of boredom or for more salt.
