Important Notice for Pet Owners: Strychnine Use in Alberta
The Pest Management Regulatory Agency has approved the emergency use of strychnine to control Richardson ground squirrels in Alberta. While this product is meant to be used underground, it can pose a risk to pets.
How pets can be exposed:
🚩Eating the bait directly
🚩Eating a ground squirrel or another animal that has been poisoned
Why this matters:
Strychnine is toxic to dogs and other animals. Even a small amount can be life-threatening.
Signs to watch for
🚩Restlessness, anxiety, or stiffness
🚩Rigid posture (standing stiffly with legs spread apart)
🚩Sensitivity to touch, noise, or light
🚩Muscle tremors or severe seizures
🚩Difficulty breathing
🚩Blue-tinged gums or tongue
Symptoms can be seen as quickly as 10 minutes and progress very quickly.
What to do if you’re concerned:
If you think your pet may have been exposed, seek veterinary care immediately—do not wait for symptoms to worsen.
Prevention tips:
✅Keep pets on leash in areas where ground squirrel control may be happening
✅Do not allow pets to consume wildlife
✅Be cautious in rural or agricultural areas
