🔔 REMINDER!!!! It is time to start your pets’ Heartworm prevention!
Heartworm is a parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes 🦟 The infected mosquito bites your pet and injects microfilaria (heartworm babies) into their blood. Over about 6 months these babies grow into adult worms and the migrate to the heart ❤️ and lungs 🫁. The worms then cause your pet to develop heart failure. Signs include coughing, lethargy, weight loss, reluctance to exercise.
Heartworm prevention is administered between June 1- November 1 and is available in topical or oral forms.
Although low prevalence in Ontario is low (approximately 0.2% in our area), there is still risk for your unprotected pet. Pets that have traveled to heartworm endemic areas, pets who have not been protected and our canid wildlife can be sources of heartworm. We have had a heartworm positive patient just last week! So low risk does not equal no risk.
