Why Our Dogs Do Not Have Allergies but Some Puppies Do
A simple, science-based explanation for our community
Allergies in dogs are more common today than they were a generation ago. Veterinary dermatologists, researchers, and breeders all see the same pattern. Allergies are not caused by a single gene or a single decision. They are almost never caused by one vaccine or one food or one breeder. They develop through a complex interaction between genetics and the environment the dog grows up in.
That explains why we have three generations of healthy dogs with absolutely no allergies while a small number of puppies raised in other homes later develop sensitivities.
Here is what is actually happening.
1. Our breeding dogs are allergy free across three generations
We live with our dogs every day. They grow up on our land and spend long hours outdoors in fresh air and natural conditions. Many of them are outside year round. They eat a consistent and nutritious diet. Our home is very low fragrance because my husband has sensitivities so we avoid scented cleaners and sprays. This creates a gentle and stable environment for developing immune systems.
Across three generations none of our adults have ever shown signs of environmental allergies, food allergies, chronic skin issues, or autoimmune inflammation. That gives us a strong and healthy genetic foundation. Genetics alone do not determine the full outcome though.
2. Puppies move into completely different environments
The moment a puppy goes to a new home, nearly everything in its world changes. Even the most loving homes contain different factors.
Common immune triggers include:
• Indoor fragrances from cleaners, plug-ins, candles or detergents
• New types of processed food or different proteins
• Urban air quality compared to rural air
• Lawn chemicals or household cleaners
• Flea and tick products
• Multiple vaccines given close together
• Mold, dust levels or carpets
• Stress and major life transitions
• Different pollen types depending on region
This variety can influence how the immune system behaves. A puppy raised in a rural, low chemical environment may react differently once exposed to new surroundings. This does not mean the new owners made mistakes. It simply shows how powerful environmental factors can be.
3. Allergies are not a simple genetic defect
Veterinary research shows that allergies develop through a mix of genetics and environment. A dog can have healthy parents with no known history and still develop allergies if environmental factors activate that sensitivity. This is very similar to people. Two parents can be allergy free yet their child might have sensitivities if the conditions align in a certain way.
4. Why our contract does not cover allergies
A breeder health guarantee can only cover conditions that are truly hereditary and diagnosable as inherited. Allergies do not fall into that category. They vary dramatically based on household conditions, diet, cleaners, fragrances, climate, stress levels, veterinary protocols, and many other factors outside our control.
Because no breeder can manage or monitor the wide range of environments their puppies are raised in after they leave, allergies cannot reasonably be covered in a breeding contract.
5. What this means for puppy families
This means no one is at fault. Not the breeder. Not the new family. Allergies require problem solving, not blame. Most cases can be managed successfully with a combination of dietary adjustments, improved gut health, lower chemical exposure, vet guidance and identification of specific triggers.
Dogs with allergies can still live long, healthy lives once their personal triggers are understood.
