Vet visits don't have to be stressful. 🩺🦜
Routine health checks are an important part of life at the Kiwa Centre, helping the team monitor the health and wellbeing of the rescued parrots in our care.

Many of these birds arrived after years of neglect and poor husbandry. Some live with lifelong conditions, such as scissor beaks, feather damage, or other health issues that require ongoing monitoring and specialist veterinary care.

Thanks to positive reinforcement training and the trust built between the parrots and their keepers, many health checks can be carried out with far less stress than people might expect. This allows a specialist avian veterinarian to examine eyes, beaks, feathers, feet, body condition, and overall health while keeping the birds as comfortable as possible.

Every parrot is different, so every care plan is too. By working at each bird's pace, we can provide the individual care they need to live healthy, enriching lives.

The work carried out at the Kiwa Centre doesn't just benefit the parrots who live here. It also helps inspire and demonstrate better welfare practices for companion parrots around the world.

An update from the Yellow-naped Amazon nest boxes in Roatán, Honduras.

Earlier this season, we shared the exciting news that three chicks had hatched in one of the artificial nest boxes installed as part of the community assisted nest box project.

Sadly, two of the chicks have since died. There are no signs to suggest predation, and the team believe environmental factors may have played a role, although this is still being assessed. Every loss is felt by those who have been following and caring for this nest.

But conservation is rarely a straight line. Today, one chick remains: Junior

Now the lone survivor of the nest, Junior is growing well and continues to be cared for by a dedicated mom who is doing an excellent job keeping her youngster fed and safe. Regular nest checks show the chick is developing as expected and, if all continues well, it will soon leave the nest and take its first flight into the trees of Roatán.

For a Critically Endangered species like the Yellow-naped Amazon, every chick matters. Each young bird that successfully joins the wild population is important for the future of the species.

While we cannot control every challenge wild parrots face, providing safe nesting opportunities, monitoring nests, and working alongside local communities helps give chicks the best possible chance of survival.

I have been tagged in a lot of lost bird posts lately, and I've also received some comments accusing Jungle Services and Miss Oscar's Parrot Rescue of being a scam, "selling birds for profit," or "not being a real rescue."
I'd like to clear up some misconceptions.
Jungle Services is a bird specialty store. As our rescue work grew, we established Miss Oscar's Parrot Rescue as a separate registered non-profit organization. We are registered with the CRA and are currently in the process of obtaining charitable status, which can take many months for approval.
The purpose of a parrot rescue is to help birds in need. We take in surrendered birds, abandoned birds, birds from difficult situations, and work to provide them with proper care, veterinary attention, rehabilitation, and eventually permanent homes when appropriate.
Yes, rescue birds are adopted out. That is what rescues do. Adoption fees help offset only a portion of the costs associated with food, housing, toys, enrichment, cleaning supplies, veterinary care, disease testing, and the countless hours spent caring for these animals. Anyone who has rescued parrots knows that there is no money to be made doing this.
The reality is that rescues operate because people care. They survive because volunteers donate their time, supporters donate supplies and funds, and because people are willing to step up when birds have nowhere else to go.
If you believe there should be more options for parrots in need, I encourage you to support rescues, volunteer, foster, or even start one yourself. The work is incredibly rewarding, but it is also emotionally, physically, and financially demanding.
Our focus has always been, and will continue to be, helping parrots and finding them safe, loving homes.
