With air quality being so inconsistent this summer due to wildfires, I made the decision to put my mares on spirulina because of its positive effects on respiratory health. Great to now it may have benefits on joint cartilage too!

Spirulina might be a beneficial supplement for horses due to its protective effect seen in other species’ joint cartilage.

My prayers and condolences for the family and friends during this difficult time.

Last Sunday, in Florida a very accomplished 15 year old rider was killed in a freak accident. Her horse simply tripped at the canter and flipped over on her in what is known as a rotational fall.

Those of us who love these animals and love to ride understand there is an inherent danger in climbing on the back of a 1200lb animal with a brain. We know it, and we do it anyway because it soothes us, or exhilarates us, it is our happy place, sometimes our refuge and our therapy.

We are all deeply saddened by this and we feel heavy with the loss of this beautiful young life.

Horses are a dangerous sport.

She wasn’t racing.
She wasn’t running barrels or poles.
She wasn’t jumping or being irresponsible.
She wasn’t fox hunting, running cross country or eventing.
She wasn’t at a breeding farm, handling a rank stallion.
She didn’t get thrown off, the horse didn’t rear up, or buck or bolt…
She wasn’t doing anything wrong. The horse wasn’t doing anything wrong, he just simply tripped.

I don’t know her, but I know my heart breaks the loss of a fellow horse woman, and bigger the loss of a child so young with such a bright future ahead of her.

My heart goes out to her family, her friends, her trainer & everyone else involved.

As coaches, we do our absolute best to prevent any accidents we can. We supply the helmets, sign the waivers, lunge the schoolies first, maintain the hoof condition & arena footing. We go slow and make sure the basics have been mastered. Ask me again why we require all riders to carry an OE membership.

Safety is and always will be our number one priority & we will always go the extra mile to mitigate risk. All of the safety precautions aside, freak accidents can happen. Not only in the arena but anywhere even walking down the street has its own percentage of risk. Life is so short, hold your loved ones close & do what you love as often as you can.

Specializing in Nutrition Since 2014

At Superior Equine Health and Nutrition Inc., we know that all horses are special and unique - that’s why we look at each horse’s nutrition individually. Workloads, ages, life stages, breeds and health issues are some of the ways horses stand out from each other. Mix in various types and qualities of forages, feeds and supplements, and seasonal changes and suddenly you have thousands of diet variations! Wow! That can get overwhelming for horse owners (and some veterinarians too) to figure out what is the best diet for their horse. Get it wrong and you may reduce performance, health and soundness - even jeopardize your horse’s life. But get it right and you and your horse will have conquered the basic foundation to responsible horse ownership - a GREAT nutrition plan that flexes as your horse’s needs change!

What can you expect? I take a comprehensive look at your horse's nutrition and diet to maximize health, based on your horse’s profile. I review your current feeding program, forages, feeds and supplements as well as management principles and provide suggestions on areas of improvement. If your horse has health issues I also consider this and build it into the program. I believe in the principle of “Forage is First” so I look at the quality of your forage (the mainstay of a horse’s diet), request an analysis (don’t worry it’s easy!) and we go from there, building in feeds and supplements as needed. I work both locally and remotely so no worries if you are a distance away - pictures, videos and emailing by internet still work great! I use the “Feed My Horse Equine Nutrition Software” to evaluate your current feeding program and find the ideal, optimal one for your horse.

Your Horse Is Special To You - We Understand. Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Horse Healthy, You Happy and Give Both Of You Superior Results!
