On International Dog Day, we're celebrating the highly trained police service dogs that work alongside officers - and the skill, discipline and trust behind every canine team.

This September, SPS is proud to host the 2026 Canadian Police Canine Association Trials, bringing police canine teams from across Canada to Saskatoon.

The public is invited to see these remarkable teams in action during two free demonstrations:

This is what proper socialization looks like!

Mochi is only 16 weeks old and handled his first professional grooming session like a seasoned pro!

It is so important that grooming socialization starts early and at home. What does this mean?

Early introduction to handling, sounds, and sensations. Building confidence and setting expectations is a great start to setting your puppy up for success!
While this should start with your breeder or foster family , it needs to continue at home, and eventually at the groomers.
Holding your puppy’s feet, looking in their mouths, or cleaning their ears is a great place to start.
Turning the blender on, vacuuming in the next room, or mowing the lawn while your puppy is distracted with a toy or bone is a great way to desensitize to loud noises.
Petting your puppy with an electric toothbrush, using a hair dryer on low and cool, or brushing your puppy is a great way to teach them about new sensations in a short and positive manner.
Remember to keep socialization sessions brief and reward with good behaviour.
Eventually increasing the length and amount of socialization.

Did you know double coated dogs shed all year round?!?

You cannot stop shedding, but you can manage it. Shedding is affected by genetics, diet, hormones, and our daylight cycles.

Double-coated dogs have a two-part hair growth cycle where primary (guard) hairs grow slowly over months/years for protection, while secondary (undercoat) hairs grow quickly and shed every 21-56 days. This cycle is triggered by light/temperature, causing massive “coat blowing” in spring and fall.

This is why we recommend consistent grooming every 6-8 weeks. Staying on a consistent schedule keeps shedding controlled, skin healthy, and the coat looking and feeling amazing!
