🥚🦴 Is Your Flock Getting Enough Calcium? 🦴🥚
Calcium plays a critical role in the health and productivity of laying hens. In fact, every eggshell your hens produce requires a significant amount of calcium, and if they don't get enough through their diet, they'll begin drawing it from their own bones.
Signs of a calcium deficiency can include:
❌ Thin or soft-shelled eggs
❌ Misshapen eggs
❌ Reduced egg production
❌ Weak or brittle bones
To support strong eggshells and healthy birds, provide a quality layer feed and offer a supplemental calcium source.
Some of the best calcium sources for laying poultry include:
🦪 Oyster Shell
The most common and recommended supplemental calcium source for laying hens. Oyster shell is high in calcium and dissolves slowly, allowing birds to absorb it as needed. Offer it in a separate feeder free-choice rather than mixing it into feed.
🥚 Crushed Eggshells
Clean, dry, and crush eggshells before feeding them back to your flock. Baking them briefly in the oven can help sanitize them. While effective, they should be crushed well so birds don't associate them with whole eggs.
🦴 Limestone Grit
Agricultural limestone is commonly used in commercial layer feeds and provides a highly available source of calcium.
🌱 Calcium-Rich Greens
While not sufficient on their own for laying hens, these can contribute additional calcium:
• Kale
• Collard greens
• Turnip greens
• Dandelion greens
• Alfalfa

For most backyard flocks, the combination of a quality layer feed and free-choice oyster shell is the simplest and most effective way to maintain strong eggshells and healthy laying birds. 🥚🐓

It's a question we hear often! The answer is simple: it's all about the health and well-being of the chicks.

Newly hatched chicks rely on each other for warmth and comfort during transit. Shipping them in groups helps maintain a safe temperature, reduces stress, and improves their chances of arriving healthy and active.

Minimum orders also help ensure the journey is as efficient as possible, especially during cooler weather when tiny chicks are more vulnerable to temperature changes.
