What another year it's been!

As the years have gone by, my ability to be active for this business on social media has become abysmal, and I do apologize for that.

This year, 2025, marks the 10th year anniversary of The Sophisticated Dog. We have been in business and serving the dog owners of Sarnia for a decade now. That is quite an accomplishment for the 33 year old woman I was back when I started TSD.

I had graduated from university in 2010, with a degree and a dream to study bird behaviour, but I ended up in public policy and law in Washington DC. And I eventually landed in Sarnia in 2015 with my now husband. At that time, I decided to spend my days, while I decided what I wanted to do next, earning a little bit of money tending too and walking people's dogs. I had no idea that after a very small handful of you entrusted me with your dogs and puppies, I would ultimately turn my love for helping owners love, and understand, their canine friends better into a thriving business ten years later.

If it had not been for the incredible people who have walked dogs for TSD over the years, or how welcoming of a community Sarnia was to my fledging business, I wouldn't be having the honour of writing this message right now.

When you run an animal care business for a decade, you have more than enough time to form loving connections with these furry friends that we are entrusted with everyday. We love them like our own. And when the time comes, we have mourned and grieved with too many of our human clients in the last few years.

Your care and trust in us to do our best to provide you with the exceptional one-on-one care that your pets deserve is what has always made me focus all my time, care, attendance and engagement with your dog (or dogs) out on walks as my top priority. A passion that I ensure all those who walk your dog on my behalf also share. We want to make sure that your dog is our only focus out on those walks together. This has allowed us to truly get to know your pups, call them our furry friends and help them learn good walking manners while still allowing them to sniff, explore and fulfill their dogness.

So although this social media page can get quiet, even when big exciting achievements are made like our 10 year anniversary, it isn't because we aren't here, online...

It is because we are out there!
With your dogs.
Learning and loving them for the individuals that they are.

To all the people and dogs and cats and birds that have trusted us to give them nothing but our focus and love over these last 10 years, we thank you!!

We apologize that we aren't any good at our social media game. But we do thank you for allowing us to grow in this community and we so look forward to meeting more friends, human or animal, in 2026!

We hope everyone has an amazing new year 🎊

Two special workshops on one day are coming to Canine Companion Club!

December 20th at 9am will kick things off with a unique Barn Hunt workshop tackling extreme distance challenges where a lot of the course will be inaccessible.
Master level rules for Barn Hunt will apply while working through these challenges, including unknown number of rats hidden and course time limit.
Participates should be at the senior level at least to join this workshop.
Workshop will run for 2.5 hours an ensure all participants get at least three turns on three slightly different course designs.
*If the challenge presents too much of a difficulty for your dog, you will be allowed to choose to run your next turn as "FFO" style to help your dog succeed.
Cost is $95 and will be presented by Tracy Wood (Fundy - Ratchx5, Remx2, CZ8P2S)

Next up at 1pm on December 20th is an Introduction to Shed Hunting.
Shed hunting is a fun sport and recreational activity for you and your dog! In the sport, your dog scents out natural shed deer antlers in a 150x300 area that can be woods or field and retrieves them back to the handler. This can be applied to any leisurely walks you also take your dog on where deer may have shed their antlers in the spring.
In this workshop, you will learn all about the UKC sport of shed hunting, as well as how to imprint your dog to the shed antler odour, and practice indoors and outside in a fully fenced area.
***It is strongly recommended that any participating dog has at least the basic understanding of how to retrieve (does not have to be retrieve to hand), as this workshop will not be covering teaching a basic retrieve. You are still welcome to join if your dog does not know how to retrieve but understand that your dog's working time in this workshop will be limited.
Cost is $75 and will be presented by Laurie McLaughlin (UKC Shed Hunt Judge, titled Champion shed dog Trip).

If you are interested in attending both Workshops (there is an hour and a half break in between for takedown and set up and for participants to go have lunch), we are offering a discount on the price.

Location is the Canine Companion Club training facility on Courtright Line outside of Brigden, Ontario.

Please sign up on the website and we hope to see you there!

This past weekend, Fundy and I traveled over to Elign county to complete in a UKC nosework trial hosted by Elgin Dog Sport Club.

We needed one qualifying run in elite containers to earn out Elite Nosework title and we got it!

(Video of our qualifying run is in the comments)

Sniffy sports are such a fun, easy and positive activity to get into with your dog, even if you never attend a trial environment. Sniffing is how our dogs see the world first and foremost. I have seen nervous/anxious/reactive dogs start their journey in nosework and come out with true confidence and calm behaviours around other dogs, strangers and new environments. This activity can change a lot!

Laurie at Canine Companion Training Academy just outside of Brigden has been the most knowledgeable, helpful, supportive and encouraging instructor I've ever encountered in this activity. We wouldn't be as accomplished in all things sniffy sports if it wasn't for her!

Interested in seeing what this is all about? Laurie is starting a brand new Introduction to Nosework, 5 week course, on September 17th at 6pm at her facility. You can check it out and register right on her website.

πŸ”₯ Heat Warning πŸ”₯

During the upcoming week, Monday, June 23 to Friday 27th, we will be seeing very high heat and humidity, making things very uncomfortable for both our canine clients and our walkers.

We will be seeing all our regularly scheduled walking clients this week but keeping walks short to just making sure the dogs are pottied and spending the rest of the scheduled time indoors and out of the heat.

If any of our regularly scheduled clients would like walks skipped this week, please let us know!

Small, local businesses supporting one another is one of the great things about our community!

Thank you so much for taking these beautiful captures of my heart dog, Fundy.

The hardest part about TSD approaching its 10 year anniversary this fall, is having to say goodbye to clients who have been with us for many years.

Today we lost Dakota.

Our deepest and most sincere condolences to Dakota's family. You were loved by all the walkers who got to know you over the years and the news of your passing is heartbreaking.

The depth of our grief over your crossing the rainbow bridge is but a our reflection of the depth of the love we had for you.

The lives of our dogs are short, too short. It is their only fault, as Agnes Sligh Turnbull said, and we agree.

Rest well, Dakota ❀️
