Some thoughts about honouring the foster experience. 💗
I wrote earlier this week about one of my fosters, Rain, moving on to her forever family. It's such a feeling of joy and accomplishment knowing that this sweet furry being has a real chance at a happy life and a secure, loving family. But I'm sure every foster will tell you how hard it is to say goodbye, and with some cats, it's especially hard. They just wiggle their way into your heart a little bit deeper. This is how I felt about Rain. My partner and I adore her. The goodbye was so hard.
I read a post from the Kitten Lady a while back and have been thinking about it a lot, even more so having to say goodbye to Rain. In it, she talks about creating a ritual to celebrate your fosters that have moved on.
I love the idea of finding different ways to honour the foster experience-- to feel the grief of the goodbye, the joy of a job well done, and creating ways to keep the precious memories of that moment in time alive. So for my ritual, I'm creating a foster photo wall. Each kitty that has come through my door will get it's spot. I hope one day I run out of room and need another wall, then another!
We'd love to hear your ideas on creating a ritual, whether it be for your foster cats or adopted cats!
