Did you know that cats have fewer toes on their back paws?🧐

Most cats have five toes on their front paws, but only four on the back!🐾

On the other hand [pun intended🫣😉], some cats are Polydactyl - meaning they’re born with extra toes! Sometimes they can have 6 or more on one paw!🤯

✨Our “Vettiquette” Tip of the Week is about Lyme disease✨

📍Last week we discussed symptoms to watch out for with Lyme disease!🦠

This week, we’re following up with how we test for Lyme disease!🧪

🦠Each spring when we run your dog’s annual heartworm test, we also screen for Lyme disease and two other common tick-borne illnesses (all in one blood test!!)
🦠If your dog’s tests positive, we may recommend following up with other testing, like a Quant C6 antibody test or in-house diagnostics (urinalysis, other bloodwork) to assess things like kidney function and cell health.

💡What happens if my dog tests positive?
If your pup shows symptoms or changes in their lab work, treatment is available. Typically, treatment would be a course of antibotics lasting a month or more. But, once infected, flare ups can happen down the line.

✨Long term monitoring is key to keeping your dog healthy and happy✨

😻As for our feline friends, cats rarely get Lyme disease, however they are still at risks for ticks! This is why tick prevention is still important for cats!

Did you know that the phrase: “dog days of summer” isn’t actually about dogs?🧐🧐🧐

The phrase actually comes from ancient times, when people linked the hottest days of the year to the rise of Sirius (the Dog Star) in the sky!🌟💫🐶🌠

✨Our “Vettiquette” Tip of the Week is about Lyme disease✨

We are seeing an increasing number of cases of Lyme disease in the Sarnia-Lambton area.
Lyme disease is spread by deer ticks and primarily affects dogs and humans. Ticks can transmit the bacteria in as little as 24 hours!😱 And we see these cases in ✨every season✨, not just in the warmer months!

Did you know that only 5-10% of dogs infected with Lyme disease show symptoms?🦠 Sometimes it can even take 2-5 months after a tick bite to even see any signs!

Things to watch for:
• fever
• tiredness
• poor appetite
• leg shifting lameness
• in some cases, kidney issues can develop as well

Follow us through the month of August as we share more tips from our veterinary professionals about Lyme disease! 🦠 🪲

🚨Lyme disease isn’t the only tick-borne disease we have encountered this year! There are other tick-borne diseases you should be aware of like: Anaplasmosis (spread by black-legged ticks) and Ehrlichiosis (transmitted by the lone star tick). 🚨

Did you know that August is Bat Nesting Season?🦇

Bats are more active at this time of year and another bat has recently tested positive for rabies in our area⚠️

Some Facts About Bats:
• bats often nest in trees, attics and barns
• rabies can be transmitted through bites or scratches
• while most bats are harmless, you should never touch one, even if it looks sick or dead

Safety Tips for Pet Owners:
✅ keep pets indoors at dusk and overnight
✅ don’t let pets sniff or play with bats
✅ seal up any holes in attics or sheds
✅ ✨make sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines✨
✅ call animal control if you find a bat in your home or yard
