Yesterday our board and train Cayes graduated and went home to Victoria! During her time with us she learnt leash manners, impulse control, and a beautiful down-stay. 8 month old working bird dog (hunting dog), she is a beautiful example of a German Short-haired Haired Pointer bred by Champion Sporting Dogs in Breton, Alberta!

Cinnamon! Currently on Salt Spring with hopes to connect to her forever person/family!
This girlie has had quite the journey, and it is through no fault of her own that she ended up in a kill shelter in California! She has been brought up to BC with the goal of settling her in a home and giving her another chance at a loving life.
She is a medium sized, young (3-6 years) German Shepherd/Malinois mix named Cinnamon. She is a lovely dog but high energy. She has an AMAZING recall, which cannot be understated a huge BONUS for a rescue. She has started her foundational training with an e-collar on low level stimulation, so an easy transition into her new home if they have off-leash ambitions would be to continue with this training tool.
The ideal home for Cinnamon would live an active lifestyle, with a fully fenced yard, no other pets or smaller children. We are teaching her how to play fetch so she has an ace in the pocket energy release.
She has a high prey drive so someone who understands a dog with a high level of prey drive is preferred. If you don't know what prey drive is, don't stress. I am happy to help bridge the gap in your knowledge. She has been desensitized to our free roam chickens whilst staying on our farm and has been very good with them.
Cinnamon can be dog reactive/selective so I am offering 3 free 1-on-1 training sessions for free to her forever home. She would be a lovely hiking partner, camping partner or biking partner!
If you were thinking of finding a pet dog to do sport with, this is your girl. She has potential doing nose work, scent detection, barn hunt and maybe even agility.
Cinnamon can be a little mouthy when over excited, taking treats a little too eagerly, so no small children is ideal but older children who understand her needs can be discussed. She would thrive in a home without any other pets as that is ideal for her success.
There is a small rehoming fee due to the level of training Cinnamon has received over the course of a month which will be continued and maintained while in our care.

Our team said goodbye to Hamish, the juvenile border collie who came to us for a week to learn how to walk nicely without pulling his elderly owner. Our farm is filled with distractions, especially the feathered and clucking kind 🐔 Hamish did wonferfully given his breed inclination to herd. We took the opportunity to lay the foundations for recall and sharpened up the 'stay' command. We'll miss you, Hamish! We look forward to continuing your training in 1-on-1 lessons at home. 😇

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself! My name is Lucy and I am a long time resident of Salt Spring Island. Many of you know me from The Old Schoolhouse Farm. I am a professional dog trainer, with certifications in Service Dog training, Security Dog training, Detection dog and Protection dogs too. I compete my dogs in a sport called PSA, and am involved with the founding of the first club on Vancouver Island, Island Bites PSA.
I've been passionate about training animals since I was a child, but my development as a professional dog trainer began when I adopted my dog Pluto (not pictured here). His drive and nature was very difficult to train with a strictly R+ (Positive Reinforcement) curriculum, so I ventured outside of our island for further guidance, and began studying with Superior Canine on the Mainland.

Since my graduation, I have helped clients on SSI and Vancouver Island without much public advertisement (as I was pregnant and then recovering with a newborn). However, as we come into spring, it is now time to make a public debut.

I have spent many months planning and developing suitable infrastructure to accommodate working and pet dogs for boarding on my farm, and am officially opening the doors for new clients in our training program.

I look forward to helping you and your dog achieve your dreams!
