Anything!

You can literally use anything your dog finds interesting/rewarding as a lure.

The obvious ones though are food, play (toys) and praise, but you can use yourself running to lure a recall, a trip to the beach to help lure/reward a good heel, a pine cone to help with sits.

Truly, it depends on the dog and what you are teaching.

If you’re interested in learning more, follow along because I’ll be showing you how to teach all kinds of things!

Luring is a super easy dog training technique!

You simply use something your dog finds interesting, motivating, or rewarding (treat, ball, stick, sock, another dog) to lure your dog into performing the new skill/behaviour your trying to teach.

Lute training is wonderful because it’s fast, easy, fun, and takes all the guess work out of learning for your dog.

I’ll be talking a lot about it this week, so stay tuned!

Different food has different values to each dog.

What do I mean by that?

Here’s an example: maybe you’re at home where there are no distractions, and you want to practice something easy, like a sit. Most likely, you can use your dogs every day kibble as a motivator/reward and he’ll be happy.

But maybe you’re somewhere way more distracting like the beach or on a walk on a trail, and/or you’re working on something more difficult like a recall or loose leash walking. You may try to use your dog’s kibble to motivate them, but they have no interest.

This is because the kibble is something they get a lot of everyday, and it might not be that tasty.

But if you were try an actual treat from the pet store, that might get there attention. It’s often tastier than their kibble, and they don’t get them as often, so to a dog, they’re more valuable.

You can also use super valuable food like cheese or hotdogs or chicken breasts if you’re in a high distraction area or working on something extra difficult.

The trick is to use the low value food whenever you can, and save the higher value stuff for when you really need it.

Food is a great way to motivate and reward your food when they’re training.

But some dogs aren’t food motivated and you don’t want to become overly dependent on treats anyway.

It’s always a good idea to use a variety of rewards when training (and in every day life)

Food, play, praise, random every day life situations (swimming in the lake, car ride, etc) are all great options. But each dog is different, so you need to figure out what YOUR dog responds best to. Experiment. Have fun!

As you can see in my video, we’re practicing our sit/wait, and Fozzy is pretty much motivated by anything 😂

What best motivates your dog? Tell me in the comments!

The positive reinforcement technique in dog training is simply rewarding your dog when they do the right thing, like a new skill or behaviour.

Using this technique takes alot of guesswork out of training for your dog. Since you’re rewarding him for a behaviour, he’ll quickly realize that’s what you want him to do. Plus, when a behaviour is rewarded, it’s much more likely to be repeated.

This means they learn quickly!

It’s also fun for them and us, because we’re making each other happy. And who doesn’t want that?

So, what can you use as a reward? Anything! Truly, it depends on the dog.

I’ll be going into more detail about that in my next post, so stay tuned!
