My Dad and I spent several hours over the last couple of days to fix fences and put up mesh fencing for the chickens to enjoy more pasture space in the safety of these trees. It is always so rewarding to know our hard work is being enjoyed by the hens. We love to see happy hens, enjoying the outdoors and fresh green grass.

This is a good tip from the UC Davis Center for Equine Health. Provide loose salt daily to ensure sodium requirements are met, especially if not feeding a โ€œcomplete feedโ€ type grain or forage balancer mineral supplement. Often horses donโ€™t consume enough from salt blocks.

Voluntary sodium intake from salt blocks varies between horses, potentially falling short of maintenance requirements. To ensure that your horseโ€™s sodium needs are met, give 1 tablespoon of loose salt per 500 pounds of body weight in feed, along with access to a salt block. Although mineral blocks may contain trace minerals such as zinc and copper, they are probably not consumed at significant levels. A ration balancer should be added to ensure trace mineral needs are met.

A nice reminder from Carl Hester that surrounding yourself with the right support can be more important than owning an expensive horse.

Good thing to watch for during the fall as well due to the seasonal onset in early developing cases ๐Ÿง

Know the signs of Cushingโ€™s Disease, or Equine PPID, to protect your horse. An abnormal haircoat or signs of laminitis could mean PPID. Not seeing regular seasonal shedding, or noticing a lighter in colour, longer or curly haircoat could all be signs of Cushingโ€™s Disease in horses.

Another watch-out is laminitis, an inflammation inside the hoof. Half of the horses affected by Cushingโ€™s experience laminitis, and it can become extremely painful and debilitating.

Other signs? Fat deposits around the horseโ€™s neck and eyes, sunken shoulders, a prominent spine and lethargy or lower athletic performance.

Keep an eye out for these signs of Equine PPID, so that you can seek treatment early.
