Make no 'bones' about it we are over the moon with excitement to have been awarded a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award. This award places the Colony of Avalon, among the top 10% of must visit destinations around the globe!


That’s right — our little outport gem in Ferryland, Newfoundland now shares the spotlight with icons like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Cayman Crystal Caves. Not bad company for a 400-year-old archaeological dig site!

While we may be small, we are monumental in history.

It turns out, getting your hands dirty, unearthing centuries-old artifacts, and chatting with real-life archaeologists is exactly what people are looking for. In a world full of speed and screens, there’s still no app that beats playing in the dirt. 😉

Good evening,

Our travelling group of six friends from Vancouver Island wish to thank you for the opportunity of spending one night at St. Mary's First Falls! We thoroughly enjoyed the view, clean grounds, new bathrooms, and beautiful trails complete with waterfall, all in such a peaceful setting! We have fond memories of our vacation time in Newfoundland, and days such as this will all contribute to a most memorable holiday.

As we looked across the bay again this morning, we all agreed that this little gem of a community was one of our favourite spots in Newfoundland! How lucky for you to call this "home":).

Also, kudos to town employee Loyola for all his help, and also suggesting Gulch Beach as a possible whale sighting spot. We're happy to say we did see a whale from a distance so are now able to cross something else off our bucket list.

We wish you an enjoyable summer!

I need your help!

Are you interested in helping make kites in St. Mary's at this awesome festival? We need a few extra hands to help with scissors and tape with some younger participants. If you want to volunteer you are welcome to come to our space in Renews where I will be giving a tutorial on how to make kites this Sunday at 2!

A warning to tourists: there are no government signs for public washrooms or petrol stations along this route.

Many businesses on the route do not allow public use of their toilet facilities. Public information online about locations of facilities and hours of operation is not 100% reliable...it is best to call in advance...but be warned that there are many dead zones with no cell phone service.

Please leave a comment if you have a business on the Irish Loop and an up to date business page that can be promoted on this page...priority given if your business allows public access to your washrooms.
