We utilize both ophthalmologist evaluations and DNA testing (including PRA through Embark) to guide our breeding decisions and keep our program moving in the right direction.

I get asked this a lot, so let’s talk about it.

Yes — when dogs are spayed or neutered, their caloric needs often go down.

This isn’t just a myth. Research shows that after sterilization, metabolism can decrease and appetite can increase. That combination makes weight gain very easy if food intake isn’t adjusted.

On average, many dogs need about 20–30% fewer calories after being spayed or neutered.

This is why so many dogs gain weight “out of nowhere” after surgery — but really, their body just doesn’t need the same fuel anymore.

What I recommend:
• Monitor body condition, not just the scale
• Discuss with your vet reducing food portions after spay/neuter
• Don’t rely only on the feeding guide on the bag
• Keep them active and fit

A lean dachshund is a healthier dachshund — especially for their long backs and joints.

If your dog was recently spayed/neutered and you’re unsure about portions ; or to just ask me if you are unsure if your dog is in ideal weight, feel free to reach out! ❤️
