Suzie has always lived in the barnyard, with occasional visits to her own kind, the cows. But given the choice she prefers to stay with these guys. Her real family, all she knows. As shown here, she if very comfortable with them. Settling down to just relax with some of her friends, this time two sheep, a goat and a geep

That's the case with most of the barnyard animals, they don't judge the others by their species, but by their personalities. They recognize when one of them, like Mac our tripod goat, is having an off day, or isn't in a good mood and they interact accordingly.

We are 100% reliant on donations, your help makes this possible.

Workday Update.

We haven't gotten many signups for a two day even, so instead we will now be holding a focused one-day workday on Sunday, May 31st from 11am–3pm to prepare the large cow pasture for grazing season.

Right now the cows are still confined to their smaller winter area while they stare longingly at the lush green pasture waiting for them. We need a few helping hands to get the fencing ready so they can finally enjoy all that fresh grass and open space.

We’re hoping for about 6 helpers.
The work mainly involves:
• attaching electric fence braid supports
• stringing electric braid
• small fence touch-ups and repairs

No experience needed at all — it’s actually pretty easy work, usually filled with lots of laughs, teamwork, and a great atmosphere.

If you’d like to help the cows get to pasture, simply email:
[email protected]
Please bring:
🔨 a drill or hammer
🥤 water/drinks
🥪 a lunch or snack
Thank you for helping the cows enjoy time in their huge summer pasture. And thank you for supporting all the animals who call Penny Lane home ❤️

We are often asked about the backstory of some of the animals here, so we are putting together kind of series of images/stories we are calling 'Then and Now', beginning with Suzie.

Suzie, the large cow who lives and plays in the barnyard with her sheep, goat and other friends was rescued from a satanic cult south of Hawkesbury, Ontario. She is a 'freemartin', a female cow who absorbed a lot of testosterone while sharing the womb with a male brother.

The cult bought her twin brother and sacrificed him while just days old, and Suzie was thrown in for free because she is not fertile and could not produce milk. The cult left her tied to a tree in the woods at two days old, by a length of string around her neck, no water, no food. A neighbour took to sneaking water and feed to her, and called us. Karyn and I were able to get to her and bring her to the farm where she now is fully grown.

She chooses every day whether she wants to go into the pasture with the other cows, or to stay with her sheep and goat buddies in the barnyard (which is usually what she chooses when I ask her "Do you want to be a cow today", if she wants to join the cows for the day, she answers by going to the cow pasture gate). She sleeps nights in a stall in the barn just as she has done since that first day when we carried her there.

Harvey may have disabled legs, but she has something pretty special — Pookah. ❤️ While Pookah swims around the pool, she happily lets Harvey hitch a ride on her back like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

Unique moments like this are why we will not let the Sanctuary fail. We are 100% reliant on your support everyday, and are able to continue doing the work we do here because of your kindness and compassion. Thank you

Larry

Once we only rescued and rehomed horses, retaining those who could not be rehomed and bringing then here

About 12 years ago, the Montreal SPCA asked if we would take in two goat brothers, whom we named Ringo and George. We lost George to old age a year ago, but little Ringo is still with us

It's why we will never give up fighting to keep the sanctuary viable as a safe haven for guys like Ringo for whom it is the only safe home they have ever known.

Your generosity has pulled us back from the very brink of failure and given us breathing room for several more months, and time to put Ringo's home on more secure footing going forward. And for all of you who came forward and reminded us of how much compassion and kindness still thrives in these difficult times, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Lily, one of our geese was dumped in Montreal along the river, along with her mate Liam, and multiple other birds. We have video of them flying over the river with Canada Geese.

It took weeks for one of our former volunteers to capture the pair and bring them here.

Once here they went their seperate ways. Liam adopted two ducks, and Lily appointed herself guardian to our sheep, with a particular softspot for our male sheep Steve, even herding them into their stall in the barn at night

Today was shearing day for them and Lily never left the closed barn door, carefully checking each member of her sheared flock over as they emerged from the barn

In our pigeon roost, one of the female pigeons craftily laid an egg up in the rafters, and hatched a very odd looking little bird, whom we named Mortimer

His mom is a white fancy pigeon, and Mortimer is oddly unlike any of the pigeons in the roost. Different shape, different feather appearance and color.

Anyone, even a hobbyist, able to help build us a stand like this? We need something similar to be able to trim hooves on goats or sheep, but as always, time here is limited. Have the DIY plans. It would probably need something for the sides.
