Meet Poe! 🐍

Poe, a beautiful ball python, came in for her annual check-up with Dr. Rachel back in April. She did wonderfully during her visit and gave us a great opportunity to make sure she’s staying healthy, well-hydrated, and thriving in her care.

Annual exams for reptiles like ball pythons are an important part of preventative health care. Even when everything looks normal on the outside, these visits allow us to check weight trends, assess body condition, review husbandry (like temperature, humidity, and enclosure setup), and catch any early concerns before they become bigger issues.

Poe was calm, and absolutely stunning as always. A great reminder of how unique and fascinating reptile patients can be!

If you share your home with an exotic pet like Poe, regular wellness exams help ensure they stay on track year after year. 🩺

Have questions about reptile care or your pet’s next check-up? We’re always happy to help!

☀️ Sunday Safety Tip: Water Safety for Pets 🐾💦

As the warmer weather continues, many pets are getting more opportunities to join in on outdoor adventures near pools, lakes, ponds, and even backyard sprinklers. While water play can be fun and refreshing, it’s important to remember that water can also present real safety risks for pets.

Not all pets are natural swimmers, and even those who are comfortable in water can become tired very quickly. Cold water, strong currents, slippery edges, and unexpected drop-offs can all make swimming more difficult and dangerous than it looks. Always supervise your pet closely whenever they are near water, this includes shallow areas, as accidents can happen in just a few seconds.

If your pet is going to be around open water or on a boat, a properly fitted life jacket is strongly recommended. This is especially important for puppies, senior pets, small breeds, flat-faced breeds, or any pet who is not a confident swimmer. A life jacket provides extra buoyancy and often includes a handle, making it much easier to safely guide your pet out of the water if needed.

After any swim or water play, rinse your pet thoroughly to remove chlorine, salt, algae, or bacteria that may be present in the water. Make sure to dry them well afterward, paying close attention to the ears, as moisture trapped inside can increase the risk of ear infections. If your pet swims frequently, regular ear checks can help catch any early signs of irritation.

Lastly, always provide access to fresh drinking water during outdoor activities so pets are not tempted to drink from lakes or pools, which can upset their stomach or expose them to harmful bacteria.

A little extra awareness goes a long way in keeping summer water adventures safe, fun, and worry-free for both pets and their people 🐶🐱💙

Laser Therapy for Pets: Healing From the Inside Out ✨

Laser therapy (also known as therapeutic laser or photobiomodulation) is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to help stimulate healing in the body. It’s a drug-free way to support comfort and recovery in many of our furry, scaly, and feathered patients.

When applied to targeted areas, the light energy helps increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and encourage cell repair. Most pets find the experience relaxing, many even settle in or fall asleep during their sessions just like Lux in this photo!

🐾 What can laser therapy help with?
It’s commonly used to support:

Arthritis and joint pain
Post-surgical healing
Soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, wounds)
Ear infections and inflammation
Dental or oral discomfort
Chronic conditions that cause pain or stiffness

🐾 What does a session look like?
Treatments are quick, typically only a few minutes per area. There’s no shaving required in most cases, and no sedation is needed. Your pet simply relaxes while the laser is gently applied to the affected region.

🐾 Why we love it
Laser therapy is a great addition to a treatment plan because it works alongside medications, rehabilitation, and other therapies to improve comfort and mobility.

If you think your pet could benefit from laser therapy, feel free to reach out to the clinic, we’d be happy to chat and see if it’s a good fit for their needs. 💙

6 Signs of Hypothyroidism in Dogs 🐶

Hypothyroidism is a common condition that occurs when a dog’s thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones. The signs can appear gradually and are often mistaken for normal aging.

Keep an eye out for these common symptoms:
🐾 Weight gain
🐾 Low energy or excessive sleeping
🐾 Hair loss or thinning coat
🐾 Dry skin or recurring infections
🐾 Cold intolerance
🐾 Decreased interest in exercise

If your dog has been showing any of these signs, it may be worth discussing thyroid testing with one of our veterinarians. Early diagnosis and treatment can help improve your pet’s comfort, energy, and overall quality of life.

Jax came to visit us a few weeks ago for a lumpectomy, and we’re so happy to share that he did amazing! From the moment he arrived, Jax was a brave and sweet patient. Dr. Rachel worked carefully to remove the lump, and he recovered wonderfully after his procedure with the care of his technician, Vanessa.

After surgery, Jax spent some time resting and recovering with us. The photo we captured shows him cozy and relaxed, with his little tongue sticking out, a sure sign he was feeling comfortable and well cared for. Moments like these always make us smile and remind us why we love what we do.

Lumpectomies are commonly performed to remove growths or masses and allow them to be evaluated. Catching and addressing lumps early can make a big difference in a pet’s health and recovery, which is why we always encourage regular checkups and having any new lumps or bumps examined.

We’re so proud of how well Jax did and grateful to his family for trusting us with his care. Wishing him continued cuddles, comfort, and a smooth recovery at home!

If you ever notice a new lump or bump on your pet, don’t wait, early detection is key.

Give us a call to book an exam so we can help keep your furry friend happy and healthy. 🐾

Q: Why was the baby goose grounded?
A: 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘬-𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥. 🤣

These three gorgeous geese, Penelope, Daphne, and Violet, came to visit Dr. Rachel not too long ago and definitely made quite the impression on everyone at the clinic! From the moment they arrived, they brought plenty of personality and charm with them. Their beautiful feathers and curious nature quickly caught the attention of our team, and it was hard not to stop and admire them.

Visits from unique patients like Penelope, Daphne, and Violet always brighten our day and remind us just how special it is to care for such a wide variety of animals. They handled their visit wonderfully, we’re always happy to welcome feathered friends like these lovely ladies through our doors!
