We wanted to take a moment to thank our wonderful clients! Thank you for supporting a local, privately-owned, small business in Bragg Creek! Dr Laura Fick is the sole owner/operator of BCVC and she and her team of incredible women are honoured to provide stellar veterinary care to the Bragg Creek area.
Recently, there have been documentaries and exposés on tv discussing the rising costs of veterinary care and how the corporatization of veterinary care is driving prices up. The unfortunate truth is that prices are increasing and big corporate entities with profit-driven bottom-lines are primarily responsible for it. Another big factor is inflation and the increases in overall cost of living.
The big veterinary conglomerates are driving out privately owned small businesses in the same way that businesses like Walmart drove out smaller, privately owned grocery and department stores. Large corporations have incredible buying power because they are able to buy in high volumes at lower prices. Smaller, privately owned clinics do not have that buying power and so the cost of goods is much higher, leading to higher operating costs.
Further, there is an incredible amount of overhead in all medical care and especially in veterinary medicine where there are no governmental subsidies. While we try to remain as competitive as possible, once rent, utilities, taxes, equipment rentals, lab fees, consumables, aftercare bills, and payroll are accounted for there is very little extra.
