Be kind. The veterinary profession as a whole has been facing record levels of burnout. Veterinarians are 2.5x more likely to commit su***de than the general public. The equine veterinary community is struggling to attract and keep the next generation in the industry, the tipping point is now. Develop a respectful relationship with your vet, perform maintenance care, have an emergency plan in place, and be kind.

Such an outstanding group of intern veterinarians at Moore Equine Veterinary Centre this year!! Huge shout out to all the hard work these amazing doctors do for our patients and to keep the wheels running at the clinic! 🐎 🩺 💪

🩺 Meet our 2022-2023 interns!👩🏻‍⚕️

Dr. Liselotte van der Togt
Dr. Kerry Dyson
Dr. Chantel Dunlop
Dr. Annie King
Dr. Hannah Morrison
Dr. Silke Verhoye

The internship program aims to provide a broad exposure to equine practice. As Moore Equine is a busy practice, our interns are the heart of the practice and are vital to providing excellent veterinary care. We provide interns with a nurturing, supportive and challenging environment that will allow them to advance their veterinary skills and build confidence. It is our aim that upon completion of the internship they will be very skilled equine practitioners and will be excellent candidates for residency application if desired. We have had on average 1-2 interns a year enter a residency program in surgery, medicine, sports medicine, reproduction, and anesthesia directly from our internship program.

Over the next few weeks, we will be posting short bios about each of our interns so you can get to know them better! ✨

Greek is not sure how he feels about his field trip to Moore Equine Veterinary Centre! For the past few weeks I noticed that he would occasionally have nasal discharge after a ride strangely only from his right nostril. He was otherwise bright, no fever, eating normally and happy to go for a ride.

Discharge from a single nostril often indicates a problem with the sinus or guttural pouch on that side, it can also mean a tooth problem where an infection has travelled to the roots which sit inside the sinus cavity.

An oral exam was normal and his guttural pouches scoped clean. Radiographs of his head showed that all his tooth roots looked normal but he had a “fluid line”, his sinus cavity (like a big honeycomb) was full of fluid (like a cup full of water). Normally the sinus should be black since it’s full of air, but his was white where it was full of fluid. No obvious masses or tumours were seen on the X-rays.

Today Greek underwent a trephine surgical procedure where he was sedated and monitored by our amazing technician Brittany, blocked with a local anesthetic and then Drs. Jenny Hiekel and Shawn Mattson drilled a hole into his sinus to place a flush tube. This tube will stay in place for the next few days to continue to flush the fluid (or slime as it’s been dubbed) with sterile saline. We will re X-ray his head once he is flushing clean to look for a cyst that might be hiding under all that slime.

He is happy and comfortable and taking carrots tonight 💕. Huge thanks to my Moore Equine family for taking such good care of my special boy!

As if COVID wasn’t enough, the horse population has been seeing outbreaks of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1), which is a common respiratory virus. However, these cases have been the neurological form of the virus (EHM). No cases have been reported in Alberta recently but check out more information below.

You may have been hearing a lot about Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV-1) recently. Europe is currently dealing with an aggressive outbreak of the virus that has resulted in the Federation Equestre Interntionale cancelling international events for the month of March. On our side of the pond, local outbreaks of the virus have been identified at farms in both Ontario and Quebec, and most recently a single positive horse was identified in Ocala, Florida. What is most alarming about these cases, is they appear to be the neurologic strain of the virus, Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM). Huge congrats to Dr. Gillian Haanen for passing her grueling Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine board exams! I am honoured to have such an amazing specialist (and woman) on our team at Moore Equine Veterinary Centre!

Congratulations to Dr. Gillian Haanen for successfully passing her Diplomate of the American College of Equine Internal Medicine board exams! Dr. Haanen started as an intern at the clinic and we are so pleased she has returned to Calgary and the Moore Equine team. Her knowledge and expertise as an internal medicine specialist is a huge asset to our clinic. Way to go Dr. Haanen, we couldn’t be more proud! 🥳⭐️👏

Obviously Greek still felt neglected after my busy last weekend on call, so he decided to get my attention by choking today 🤦🏻‍♀️! Thankfully when horses “choke”, they can still breathe because it’s actually food stuck in their esophagus when they swallow (ex. Eating their grain too fast because they think they are starving 🐷), not something blocking their windpipe. He was very quiet about it and still took a carrot when offered! Thankfully A fellow boarder noticed he didn’t finish his grain and when I came out to check on him he had a bit of green feed in his nostril, and was quite sore to touch the left side of his neck where his esophagus is. Some horses are more dramatic and can have significant amounts of feed and saliva coming from their mouth and nostrils, coughing, acting colicky, and really let you know there is a problem!
After a bit of sedation and anti inflammatories to relax his esophagus, I passed a tube up his nose into his esophagus and was able to lavage the stuck feed material. Thankfully his lungs sounded clear (they can aspirate feed and saliva into their lungs leading to pneumonia), and his temp is normal, but obviously I’ll be watching him closely over the next few days!

Close to 2000km, 17 emergencies, a few others handled by my amazing colleagues since I was so slammed, and our outstanding intern veterinarians Drs Lohnherr and Duggan holding down the fort at Moore Equine...I survived the long weekend on call (barely)! 🐴

‘Tis the season to pay extra attention to your equine friends as the cold snaps and warm Chinooks take their turns this winter! We already knew these weather shifts made them much more prone to colic but finally science! 🤓

College thesis paper looks at the relationship between barometric pressure and incidence of colic in horses.
