A few posts back we shared an impromptu snippet from Daphne’s first training/assessment session with Peppy, a 5 year old Paint. Throughout the ride, Daphne refers to the Training Scale, which is something she routinely does while working with horses of all levels.
We’ve put together this graphic to further show how we use the scale as a “logical and systematic progression for training the horse”.
The Training Scale is nothing new and is used extensively in classical dressage. As such we are sure many, if not all of you, have seen this scale (also referred to training pyramid) in one or more of it’s various forms.
But still, we encourage you to frequently review and really KNOW the Training Scale, so take a look and save this post for future reference.
In this graphic we’ve also included some tips that we feel help further explain how and why you can bring these concepts to your rides for greater training success:
✅ Each step is based on the previous one but also helps the neighbouring stage: qualities are both progressive and intermeshed.
✅ Consider these steps the ground rules for developing any horse into a wonderful riding partner who is willing and able to reach their full potential.
✅ Ensure you are able to define each step in a simple and concise phrase, to yourself, in order to best explain them to your horse.
✅ Periodically check in with the Training Scale for all horses regardless of their level to identify possible issues and bring out their best.
So, ingrain these into your memory 😊:
1. Rhythm… The regular, metronome-like footfalls of each correct stride for each gait.
2. Suppleness… Lack of tension both mentally and physically.
3. Contact… Acceptance of the reins and aids equally on both sides.
4. Impulsion… Desire to carry the rider forward with increased power through suppleness.
5. Straightness… Correct body alignment and tracking in good balance.
6. Collection… Ultimate engagement & elasticity, lightness & mobility of the forehand, self-carriage, ease of movements now with cadence.
Ofcourse this is still just an overview, so here’s a reminder that you can find Daphne’s podcast on the Training Scale here:
