Managing an easy keeper can be challenging, especially when they gain weight even on a forage-only diet. But all horses need forage to support gut function and overall well-being.
As a general rule, horses require a minimum of 1.5% of their body weight in forage per day. However, that forage must be spread out throughout the day to avoid periods longer than 4–5 hours without access, which could increase the risk of ulcers, colic, and other digestive issues.
At the same time, free-choice access to hay or pasture is not ideal for easy keepers as it can cause weight gain. It's estimated that over 51% of horses are overweight, increasing the risk of conditions like laminitis, insulin resistance, joint issues, arthritis, decreased performance, and reduced heat tolerance.
The first step in managing their diet is to eliminate high-calorie commercial feeds and grain-based concentrates. From there, strategic forage management becomes key.
✅ For hay:
Opt for mature grass hay that is high in fiber and lower in calories. Use slow-feed hay nets or soak hay to extend mealtime and slow intake.
✅ For pasture:
Use a grazing muzzle to reduce intake. If that’s not enough, limited turnout or a dry lot with hay-only feeding may be necessary.
📌 Don’t forget: Easy keepers still need balanced nutrition. Adding a vitamin and mineral supplement like AminoTrace+ ensures their diet supports overall health without adding excess calories.
