Central Alberta Humane Society (formerly known as Red Deer & District SPCA) is a 'no kill/max adopt' shelter and adoption center dedicated to the re-homing of unwanted, abandoned and stray companion animals. This is our mission and together with a dedicated staff, over 500 volunteers, and a generous community of advocates and donors we are making a big difference in the lives of so many desperate, lost or forgotten animals each year.

💔 Darling has been in shelter for 362 days 💔

With her sparkling eyes, gorgeous coat, and infectious smile, it’s impossible not to be charmed by her the moment you meet her 🥰.

Her happy, upbeat personality makes her the life of any gathering, whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood, a game of fetch in the backyard, or a cozy night in snuggled up on the couch ❤️🥰.

She’s highly motivated and incredibly smart, making her an absolute star when it comes to learning new tricks and commands 🤓. Darling thrives on positive reinforcement and would be the perfect candidate for continued training or even fun activities like agility or obedience classes 😇!

Darling has plenty of playful energy and would love a family that enjoys staying active 🏃‍♀️. She would flourish in a home that can provide her with lots of exercise, enrichment, and, most importantly, plenty of love and attention ❤️😘. Darling’s affectionate nature knows no bounds, she’s always ready with a wagging tail, a happy bounce, and a kiss for anyone lucky enough to be part of her world ❤️.

💔 Janice has been in shelter for 482 days 💔

This calm, sweet girl is a little bit timid around new people but once she gets to know you she’s quite the companion 😊. We do require that Janice goes to a home with another kitty as that’s when she’s most comfortable 💕.

To help her continue to be stress free we would recommend that she doesn’t go home with little kids as the fast movements and loud noises may be a bit too much for her 🥰.

There’s honestly nothing better than gaining the trust and love from a fearful kitty, do you think you’re ready for that feeling by taking a chance on Janice 😊?

We need your help kicking off our Ultimate Garage Sale with Set-Up Day on Thursday, July 3rd!

Table Loading:
Meet at Bluebird Storage at 9:00am. We will load the tables from our storage unit into the moving truck.

Table Unloading/Set Up:
Meet at St. Joseph High School Fieldhouse at 10:30am. We will be unloading the tables from the moving truck into the school and setting them up.

This is a perfect way to support the animals and get in some early lifting reps before garage sale season hits full swing! Can't help with the heavy lifting? Meet us at St Joseph High School at 11am to help with ther set up tasks! 💪

Canada URGENTLY needs a national plan that includes animals in emergency response. More than 60% of Canadian households have a pet, and 71% of pet owners consider them family, yet animals are still not formally accounted for in most emergency planning.

When disasters strike, families need support to safely evacuate with their animals, access to pet-inclusive shelters, food, veterinary care, and clear coordination. Without it, people delay seeking safety or are forced to make heartbreaking decisions.

Excluding animals from emergency planning leads to:
🐾Increased suffering for animals left without care.
🚫Greater risk and confusion for first responders.
⚠ Physical and emotional trauma for people displaced by emergencies.

Humane Canada is calling for immediate action. We’re urging Parliament to:

1. Formally recognize the role of professional animal welfare responders
2. Integrate coordinated animal response into all emergency planning-federal,
provincial, and territorial
3. Provide pet-inclusive services in shelters and accommodations
4. Establish dedicated funding to support animal response in disasters

Sweet Pea is one of those rare cats who gets along with just about everyone. Feline friends? She’s totally cool with them. People? She hasn’t met a single human she didn’t immediately like 🥰! Whether you’re a seasoned cat whisperer or a first time adopter, Sweet Pea is ready to snuggle her way right into your heart ❤️.

🆘 WE ARE URGENTLY SEEKING A FOSTER!! 🆘

We are reaching out with an urgent appeal to find a foster home for one of our long term residents, Tekka. This sweet and affectionate boy has been in our care since September 2024. While our team ensures that all animals receive daily enrichment, affection, and exercise, the shelter is still no substitute for the warmth and stability of a real home.

Unfortunately, we have recently noticed a marked decline in Tekka’s mental and emotional well being. After many months in the shelter environment, he is beginning to show signs consistent with kennel depression. Despite our best efforts, Tekka is visibly losing interest in his surroundings and has become increasingly despondent.

Tekka would thrive in a calm, structured foster home that has experience with dogs who get over stimulated easily, where he can decompress and regain his joy for life. He must be placed in a dog free home, as he does not do well with other canines. However, he has shown he is comfortable living alongside cats, making him an ideal companion for feline friendly households.

If you or someone you know may be able to offer Tekka a temporary home, even for a short period, we would love to hear from you. Fostering not only changes an animal’s life, but it also creates space at our facility to help more animals in need.

Together, we can give this deserving boy the second chance he truly needs ❤️‍🩹

🥰 Introducing Tess! 🥰

At just 4 months old, sweet little Tess has already been through more than any kitten should ❤️‍🩹. She was found abandoned outside our building, all alone but even after that rough start, her gentle heart has stayed wide open 🥰.

Tess is playful, curious, and happiest when she has a toy in her paws or a furry friend by her side 😍. She loves other cats and would thrive in a home where she has a buddy to snuggle and chase shadows with 💕.

This precious girl is ready for a fresh start and a family to call her own 😊. She’s looking for a forever home where she’ll be safe, loved, and cherished just like she deserves 🥰😍.

"We took Soba home today. It took him about 20 minutes sussing out the backyard then it was play on with our other dog Pfeiffer. He wanted to stay outside all night and when he did come inside he crashed hard. Only one accident inside so far we’re doing good! We’re so excited to see how he grows as a dog and see more of his personality come through!

Day 6 - Soba/Soda Pup is settling in just perfectly! He’s still trying to figure some things out but definitely loving his big sister Pfeiffer."

Their attention to detail and professionalism truly shine, and thanks to them, our parking area has never looked better!
