This horse has been very competitive in his futurity year all while missing the lower 306.

With regular maintenance this has caused zero problems. However, without proper maintenance the opposing upper 206 molar would continue to erupt and protrude into the lower gum space.

In the recent weeks we have seen the perfect example of the importance of getting your horses teeth done regularly.

The horse in the first photo is around 19 and hasn’t had regular maintenance. This horse never struggled holding weight until this fall and had never any behavioural issues while under saddle.

This horses ability to eat grass and hay is very limited due to multiple issues. Multiple teeth are “cupped out” or expired, and his 110 and 210 molars were so protuberant that they were encroaching into his lower gums causing extreme discomfort.

The horse in the second photo is 22, has had regular dental work every 1-2 years. All teeth are stable, and still has near perfect mastication.

Many dental issues are easily avoided, don’t be stuck in this unfortunate circumstance and remember to regularly get your horses teeth checked!

Horses are resilient and can withstand a ton of trama, all while adapting to their newly found circumstances.

The top incisor now tends to hook on the edge of these bottom incisors causing stress on the tooth and improper mastication (chewing).

Get your horses booked in to avoid these problems!

This poor girl somehow lost her lower 406, allowing the upper 106 to grow down and pierce the bottom of the jaw causing her extreme discomfort l

Being a mama to a new baby, her new owners wanted to make sure everything was ok.

Another great example why it’s good to get your horses teeth checked!

Cribbing slowly takes away horses front incisors, reminder to do all you can to prevent cribbing!

𝐷𝑜 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒, 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜✌️

Caps can be just as troublesome for a young horse as wolf teeth. Caps or “deciduous teeth” come loose as a young horses adult teeth erupt. This process can happen anywhere from 2 - 5 years of age, depending on the horse. Loose caps that haven’t fallen out yet can cause 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 while eating and being rode in a bit, causing a young horse to sometimes loose weight or develop bad habits under saddle. Some times as caps fall out they leave 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 of tooth that stay in the space where the cap fell out. This can also cause pain, discomfort, and in extreme causes can cause infection as the adult tooth try’s to come through and pushes the fragment into the gums of the horse.
