Did you know horses should have forage available 24 hrs a day to maintain gut health?

With the transition into winter going from pasture to hay, horse owners tend to make the change for their horses feeding in meals.

Meals can be useful in managing how much your horse is eating however horses should never go more than 4 hours in between feedings. Horses that get fed in meals more than 4 hours apart are prone to developing gastric ulcers. Ulcers can sometimes be difficult to identify as most show symptoms through their behaviour displaying discomfort around their girth line and flanks and even showing aggression.
Feeding smaller portion’s multiple times a day or using slow feeding hay nets are some effective ways to ensure your horse is getting the nutrients he/she needs while avoiding long periods of their stomachs being empty.
