Happy Hoof Inc.

Happy Hoof Inc. Natural Performance Barefoot Trimmer. First and foremost... I am addicted to not only horses, but their feet as well.

Late in 2011 I was introduced to a lady named Birgitta Wilkenson (Success With Horses). She showed me things that I didn't know about my horses feet. From there I did some research on my own, everything confirmed what she had told me. June 2012 I went to a 3 day clinic at Birgitta's to learn how to trim my own horses. Over the summer I trimmed our horses and a few horses for friends. Wanting to le

arn more I contacted Lisa Huhn to sign up for her Fast Track Course in Medicine Hat. Spending 2 weeks with Lisa taught me so much more and helped me to refine my trimming skills. October 2013 I went to a 3 day ABC Hoof Trim Clinic in BC (All classroom) Where I learned more about the bar and how invasive it can be. July 2015 I took an Advanced ABC Hoof Trim Clinic w/ Cheryl Henderson in Rocky Mountain House Alberta, for 3 days. We worked on cadaver feet as well as live horses. July 2015 and September 2015 was the Cowboy Challenge Clinics. This was to help hone my skills as a horseperson and to challenge myself as well as my horse. I look forward to helping owners better understand the function of the horses hoof and helping horses regain true soundness. To learn more, check out:

Removing the hoof wall from the coffin bone, showing how tight the connection should be.

Removing sole from a cadaver hoof to better understand the laminae, corium and digital cushion.

We saw where the bar is supposed to be according to the laminae on the coffin bone in the last post.

This hoof capsule confirms the position of the bar.

I have yet to find a capsule in which the bar deviates from this placement.

Warning: Graphic video of horse hoof.

Let’s talk about bar.
They are the most difficult part of trimming. Not only to trim, but to know and understand where they should end.
And over the next little while I am going to post videos that show where the bar truly should be.

When we started out riding, everything seemed to be fine and the farther we got things progressed for rowdy so I walked most of the way home.

So that means when I go out west, I’m taking cash and not rowdy this time.

So many folks don’t trim bar or trim enough of it.
Yes, they need to have bar, yet like the wall it needs to be trimmed. The difficult part is knowing where it’s supposed to be.
It shouldn’t be higher than the wall.
It shouldn’t go beyond the midway point of a healthy frog.
It shouldn’t lay over or be imbedded into the sole.

It should be aligned with the frog.
It should be as wide as the wall.

Do you know how to tell the difference between bar and sole?
If not, join us for a clinic. www.happyhoofinc.com/clinics

Learning to trim is not easy and there is a lot more to it than many realize.

Does that mean you shouldn’t try?

Hell no!

Do it anyways, it is so rewarding when you not only see the changes you made to the hoof, but to your horse as well.
