This past weekend (Thursday to Sunday) was definitely one for the books. A Blizzard in April! Haha of course there was!
We started off with a clinic on Thursday to sharpen up our cutting skills before the big show on Friday! This weekend I showed our mares Factory Cat and Hotter Than May. Both horses did wonderful!! We managed to place and come home with earnings!! 💵 I really do love my fiery redheads!! It was very neat to ride two very different horses and experience the way they get the job done! So cool!

I’d also like to put a huge thank you out to the people that make this show happen and all the hard work that goes into it from the secretary, the show manager, the turn back help, the trainers, the clinicians, the judge, to the competitors that make up the classes for me to enter. It really takes a whole whack of people to pull off a show so, THANK YOU! I definitely appreciate all the help and hard work in the pen and outside of the pen! Especially for the Ranch cutters at the end of the day for the people that stick around right till the last cutter, we appreciate you!!

The last couple weeks I had the opportunity to help a young girl get her feet wet in cutting pen! Briar not only showed up every day for the last week and a half to ride a spicy little red mare named Biscuit(Factory Cat) she had never rode before, worked the flag, took instruction, worked live cattle, had late nights and sore muscles and did it with grace, confidence and an attitude to achieve big things! It wasn’t always easy but the good things never usually are. It teaches us resilience, grittiness, and the chance to become better at whatever we try!
I am so proud that she first of all showed up, wanted to give cutting a try, put her everything into it to make that happen, and lastly, just did it!! Way to go Briar!! I was so cool to watch as you learned the sport of cutting! Thank you for trusting me and my horses to help you along this journey into cutting!
I am so glad that you decided to show after the clinic to get the full experience. I think we may have her hooked!!! 😉 I am so proud of you!
Thank you Michelle for all your help the last couple weeks and over the weekend! It was a lot of fun and so many huge smiles! Thank you to everyone who came out to watch and cheer us on it definitely made us both feel special! Briar scored every cut she made and walked away with some winnings 💰 What a great way to spend the weekend!!

Well to say the last few weeks haven’t been a whirlwind would be a lie! Life around here has been on the go! 😃 but with that being said, I would not trade it for anything!
We started off with an amazing Stock Dog Clinic by Jared Epp. 10 handlers worked hard over the weekend working the dogs on sheep and getting their commands and positioning fine tuned!
Then I was off to Calgary to support and cheer on the Saskatchewan participants for the SHOWDOWN!! It was one day of action packed entertainment! 3 disciplines under one roof! Cutting, Cow-horse & Reining. What a cool idea!
Next we had a 6 day Horsemanship Clinic with Jim Anderson. The 12 participants worked over 6 sessions to better themselves and their horses, building partnerships, trust and confidence. Some participants put on the first ride on colts, did amazing partnership with liberty, tackled some behaviour issues, worked on environmental desensitizing.
Over the week there were so many amazing changes and improvements in everyone! So neat to watch and get to experience that!

The next day after our clinic I was off to Moose Jaw for my very first Cowboy Dressage clinic and show! We had 2 days of clinic sessions to get us ready for the show on Sunday.
Sunday was show day! Factory Cat (Biscuit) and I entered 3 classes. We did great and had a blast! We ended up with a beautiful ribbon for high point amateur! We also got a Rookie token/pin for it being our first ever Cowboy Dressage Show!
I’m very excited for the next show and to learn more and grow as a rider as we take on the show season!
I have to give a thank you shoutout to Hayley Moats at Rough Bark Arena for the lessons and coaching the last couple months. It has helped me so much!
Also to Michelle Howes for helping me and guiding me through my first show and to both ladies for answering a million questions about it all! I appreciate the help and support! The whole experience was a positive one and got to meet some really wonderful horsewomen!

An added note: Do something that scares you! It’s exhilarating and feels so good to know you pushed yourself out of the comfort zone and went for it! If you do better, you can be better! 😉
Next on the calendar 📅 is our first Sask Cutting show of the season April 24-26 in Moose Jaw!

Now we are just about ready to hit the fields for seeding! Wow what a spring so far!! 😃
Happy 🌱 seeding/spring 🌼 everyone! See you all down the dusty trail!

⚠️All horse owners, boarders and riders please read.⚠️
As you all I’m sure have heard about the EHV (Equine Herpes Virus) is going around south of the boarder as well as in Alberta. At this time the risk is low but we have decided to take precautions and ask there to be limited in and out access to the arena and pens. The people that have riding memberships are still able to ride here. We ask that this be your only other location other than your home. But ultimately it’s your choice. Please tack and tie to your trailer instead of on the rail in the arena to keep exposure limited. We will be disinfecting all rails, doorways and any other high traffic areas. We expect everyone to follow our guidelines and will continue to monitoring the situation closely and will make adjustments as needed. We will be doing this till Dec 1st or until we know more.
Thank you for understanding! We appreciate your patience.
Here are a few things that you can do to help.
- Keep your horses home. As much as we all love showing/traveling to compete or practice, now is the time to stay home.
- Don’t share equipment amongst horses. Keep buckets, halters and all grooming & tack separate
- Wash hands between handling horses.
- Limit horse to horse horse contacts
- Vaccinate (contact your vet to discuss)
- Limit people traffic. You never know where someone has been.
- Keep an eye on your horse for any weird abnormal changes.
- Ensure your farrier, vet and others are not handling or in any barns that have been exposed.
Here is a bit of info on EVH-1
What is EHV-1 and why is it a concern?
EHV-1 is a highly contagious virus that can cause:
• Respiratory illness
• Abortion in pregnant mares
• Neurologic disease (Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy, EHM)
Neurologic cases may show hind-end weakness, incoordination, urine dribbling, and in severe cases, the inability to stand.

What you can do as a horse owner during this time is:

1. Monitor your horses for any signs of illness such as:
• Fever
• Nasal discharge
• Cough
• Depression
• Loss of appetite
• Hind-end weakness or incoordination
• Drooping tail
• Urine dribbling
• Pregnant mares aborting
• Stumbling
• Or any other neurological signs
